JACKSON, Tenn. – The Arkansas Tech baseball team jumped right back into action on Tuesday afternoon and played a mid-week game at Union after playing their three-game conference with East Central on Sunday-Monday. Tuesday's result was much of the same as the previous two days as Tech picked up the win, 8-4 over Union.
In the game, the Wonder Boys (9-3) wasted no time in getting their offense going as they loaded the bases with no outs to start the top of the first.
Kandon Bennett led off with a single up the middle and was followed by a single through the left side by
Josh Detweiler.
Evan Hafley was then hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases.
The first run of the eventual four-run frame scored in the next at-bat as
Trace Maddux hit a sacrifice fly out to left field. A HBP to
Yadier Medina loaded the bases once more. Two more runs then crossed the plate as
Shelby Quiggins singled up the middle to score Detweiler and Hafley. During the next at-bat, Medina scampered home on a wild pitch.
An inning later it was 6-0 Wonder Boys as Maddux laced a triple to right-centerfield, scoring Detweiler and Hafley, who previously walked in the inning.
The Bulldogs (6-7) pushed across their first run of the game in the bottom of the second on a balk with the bases loaded.
The score held at 6-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Union got a solo home run.
In the top of the sixth, the Wonder Boys plated their final two runs of the game on a two-RBI double down the left field line by
Logan Schwenke, who was pinch-hitting in that spot. In the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs got a run back with a leadoff home run to left. They would score their final run of the game in the bottom of the ninth to bring the game to its final of 8-4.
On the mound, the Wonder Boys used four arms to get through the mid-week affair.
John Walsh got the start and pitched a pre-determined 3.0 innings. Walsh was credited with the win and would not allow a hit. He was charged with one earned run as he walked four and struck out four.
Grant Shahan pitched the next 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He would walk one and strikeout two.
Marshall Brown took the seventh and eighth innings and did not allow a baserunner while striking out two.
Ty Van Meter pitched the ninth and allowed one unearned run on one hit and struck out one.
The Wonder Boys will now prepare for a big road test this coming weekend as they travel to Magnolia to take on nationally-ranked Southern Arkansas in a three-game GAC series. The series is scheduled to start on Friday night with a first-pitch of 6 p.m.
