MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Both the Arkansas Tech and Southern Arkansas baseball teams came into this weekend with winning streaks in hand, but by the end of Friday night, it was SAU that remained on a roll as they beat Tech by a score of 12-0 in a shortened seven-inning game.
The No. 8-ranked Muleriders (13-1, 7-0 GAC) struck first with a single run in the bottom of the second. In the third inning, SAU powered themselves to five runs on four hits with two of those leaving the park. The first was a two-run home run. Four batters later, SAU connected on a three-run shot.
A scoreless fourth inning gave way to more fireworks in the fifth as the Muleriders hit a grand slam to go up 10-0. SAU added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring their total to its final of 12 runs.
On the offensive end for the Wonder Boys (9-4, 4-3 GAC) they found it hard to get much going against one of the toughest pitchers in the league thus far in Jeremy Adorno. Entering the weekend, Adorno led all of NCAA Division II in strikeouts with 42 in 27.0 innings. On Friday night, he was just as advertised with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.
He also did not allow a Wonder Boy hit until the top of the final inning in the seventh when
Trace Maddux singled to centerfield with one out.
The Wonder Boys will look to bounce back on Saturday as they and the Muleriders are set to conclude the series with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
