RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Seniors
Tony Hall,
Kevin Howard and
Cameron Kennedy took to the court inside Tucker Coliseum for the final time in their careers on Friday evening and ultimately left the floor in the closing seconds to a standing ovation as the Arkansas Tech men's basketball team picked up a 79-65 win over Henderson State.
In their final performances on the Tucker Coliseum court, Hall, Howard and Kennedy combined for 36 points.
Hall fell a point shy of his career-high as he had his fourth 20-plus point effort with 22 points. He also added eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Kennedy surpassed the 100 made three-pointers for his career and knocked down a trio of trifectas on his way to 11 points. Kennedy added three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Howard played limited minutes as he continues to battle through injury and made his lone field goal attempt.
The play of the seniors was complimented by standout performances from
Taelon Peter and
Niko Gosnell. Peter ended the game as the leading scorer with 23 points. He was 5-of-8 overall shooting, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Peter's 23 points are a new career-high for the Russellville native. Gosnell was perfect from the floor, going 4-of-4. He also added five free throws to end his night with 13 points.
As far as the overall action went on the floor, the Wonder Boys (10-17, 7-14 GAC) took the lead on the game's opening possession and remained out in front the entirety of the first half, leading by as many as 10 points before heading to the locker room with a seven-point advantage.
At the 15:54 mark of the second half, Tech established their largest lead of the game at 11 points. Over the next three and a half minutes of action, Henderson State went on a 15-0 run to take their first lead of the game.
The Wonder Boys were able to snap the run on a painted jumper be Kennedy at the 11:56 mark to spark a 9-0 run that put them back up by five points with right at 9:30 left to play.
From there, the Wonder Boys were able to maintain control of the game and eventually ended the game with a 14-point margin of victory.
The Wonder Boys will now prepare for a quick turnaround as they hit the road to close out their 2021-22 season tomorrow afternoon at Southern Arkansas. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip-off in Magnolia.
