Golden Suns work past Henderson State for first win of the spring

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team picked up their first win of the spring season on Friday as they defeated Henderson State in a non-conference match, 6-1, out at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.

Despite what might appear from the team score, the match was close and the Golden Suns were clutch down the stretch to secure their team points.

After making relative quick work of the Reddies (1-3) in double play by winning all three matches and only dropping five games total, the Golden Suns (1-2) were in for a battle in singles action.

The first singles match to finish was at No. 3 with Daniela Baez shutting out her opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Newcomer Madalena Silva matched Baez's result at No. 4 singles and gave the Golden Suns a 3-0 lead in the team match.

Henderson State got their first and only point in the next match to finish as Mulan Kamoe knocked off Tech's Lea Grinberg in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

Singles Flight No. 2 saw the match be clinched for the Golden Suns as Aastha Dargude was pushed to the limits but won in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.

With the match in hand for the Golden Suns, attention turned towards the finish of No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Both of those matches featured a pair of freshmen for the Golden Suns in Maria Krite and Maggie Holcomb and each would go to a decisive third set.

At No. 5, Krite battled back from a set one loss (7-5) with an emphatic 6-2 win in set two. In the third set, Krite continued her momentum and won 10-3.

No. 6 singles was the final one to play out. Like Krite, Holcomb overcame a set one defeat (6-1) and won the next two to win the match. Holcomb won the second set, 6-4 and the third, 7-5.

With the win, Golden Suns head coach Abby Davis is now just one victory shy of reaching the 200-win milestone in her career. The next match to be played for Tech is on Wednesday, February 23 at home against Ouachita. First-serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
