Golden Suns Grab a 32 Point Win Over Arkansas-Monticello

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - Following a tough 56-59 loss against Southern Nazarene on Saturday, the Arkansas Tech Women's Basketball team bounced right back with a 93-61 win over Arkansas-Monticello. The Golden Suns move to 13-9 overall with a 10-8 record among Great American Conference opponents.

Kaley Shipman led the way for the Golden Suns shooting 77.8% (7-of-9) from the floor and 75% (3-of-4) from long range to put up the team high 17 points against the Cotton Blossoms. Following Shipman was forward Nikki Metcalfe who scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, picked up an assist, blocked a shot and came up with a steal. Closing out the leading players for Tech was the backcourt duo of Tori Lasker and Ashlei Lopez, each with 10 points on the night. Both Lasker and Lopez hauled in seven boards for the Golden Suns as well.

Arkansas Tech came out of the gates strong in the first quarter shooting 55.0% (11-of-20) from the field to put up 24 total points in the first quarter against Arkansas-Monticello. The Cotton Blossoms had a difficult time getting shots to fall for them in the first quarter shooting 21.43% (3-of-14) from the floor. 

In the second quarter of play the Golden Suns were once again firing on all cylinders shooting 50.0% (8-of-16) from the floor and made their only attempted three ball of the quarter to end the second 100.0% from beyond the arc. Arkansas Tech dominated Arkansas-Monticello defensively in the second quarter holding them to a mere 8.33% (1-of-12) from the floor to control both sides of the ball exceptionally well. Tech went into the halftime break holding a massive 46-15 lead.

In the second half the Golden Suns once again came out hot shooting 56.25% (9-of-16) from field goal range and 75.0% (3-of-4) from three in the third quarter. From the floor, the Golden Suns were even more impressive in the fourth and final quarter as they shot 66.67% (10-of-15) from field goal range to end the game shooting 56.7% (38-of-67) overall. Arkansas Tech had their way underneath the basket tonight scoring 56 of their 93 points from inside the paint. The Golden Suns also recorded 22 fast break points and 31 total points from off the bench.

The Cotton Blossoms found a little bit of offensive rhythm in the the second half shooting 42.1% (8-of-19) from the floor and 60.0% (3-of-5) from long range. In the final quarter, the Cotton Blossoms recorded their highest shooting percentage of a quarter in the game hitting 47.06% (8-of-17) from field goal range. In the end, it wasn't enough as the Golden Suns came out way ahead to grab the 93-61 win.

The Golden Suns will hit the road for their next game as they head to Alva, Okla. to take on the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers for a Thursday night clash. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday night in Alva.
