Tipping Off

The conference portion of the 2022-23 regular season schedule for the Arkansas Tech women's basketball team is underway as the Golden Suns have started Great American Conference Play with a solid 2-1 record.

The gauntlet of conference games continues this weekend as Tech will will travel to Magnolia on Saturday to take on Southern Arkansas in a road contest.

Against Southern Arkansas last season, the Golden Suns swept the season series winning the first one at home in Tucker Coliseum, then again on the road in Magnolia against the Muleriders.

In terms of all-time series histories, this will be the 93rd matchup against Southern Arkansas. Tech holds an 84-9 record over Southern Arkansas in the all-time series
 



Tech Tidbits

The Golden Suns continue Great American Conference play with a solid 4-3 overall record and a 2-1 GAC record. They picked up their first two GAC wins of the season at home against Arkansas-Monticello, then on the road against Ouachita Baptist in overtime.

Statistically, this year, the Golden Suns are averaging 75.5 ppg and rank third in the GAC. On the defensive end of the court, the Golden Suns rank fifth in the league in scoring defense, giving
up an average of 62.8 ppg. In terms of field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense, the Golden Suns are second in the conference as they shoot at an overall clip of .436 (181-of-415) and are limiting their opponents to a .351 mark (132-of-376) to claim the top spot in the GAC.

From beyond-the-arc, the Golden Suns are shooting at a clip of .291 (30-of-103) to rank tenth in the GAC while their opponents are making three-pointers at a mark of .331 (44-of- 133) to rank eleventh. From the free throw line, the Golden Suns are shooting .545 as a team (61-of-112) to rank last.

Individually, the Golden Suns have two players averaging double figures in scoring. Jalei Oglesby leads the way at 18.3 ppg, which is the third best scoring average in the GAC. Kaley Shipman is the other double figure scorer for the Golden Suns at 11.8 ppg.

The Golden Suns are coached by Dave Wilbers, who is in his 16th season on the sidelines at Tech. A member of the 300-career win club, Wilbers has a career record of 332-110.

Overall in his time at Tech, Wilbers has kept the Golden Suns as perennial contenders in the GAC, the region and the nation, winning 20 or more games nine times, capturing seven conference regular championships, five conference tournament championships and advancing to nine NCAA Regional Tournaments.
 



Scouting the Muleriders

Southern Arkansas is off to a rocky start to their season with a 3-5 overall record and an 0-3 record in conference play. Prior to hosting the Golden Suns in Magnolia on Saturday, the Muleriders picked up a 112-74 win at home against Arkansas Baptist College on Wednesday.

Statistically this season, the Muleriders average 88.4 ppg on offense to rank first in the GAC and give up an average of 83.7 ppg to rank last in the GAC. In terms of field goal percentages, Southern Arkansas shoots at a .395 clip overall (206-of-521) to rank ninth in the conference and are allowing opponents to shoot at a mark of .486 (238-of-490) to rank last.

From three-point range, the Muleriders shoot at a .345 clip (92-of-267) to rank second in the GAC and are allowing their opponents to shoot .246 (29-of-118) from range to rank first. At the charity stripe, the Muleriders shoot .689 (115-of-167) to rank eighth in the GAC.

Individually, the Muleriders boast three players scoring in double figures and are led by Diamond Morris who is scoring 13.6 ppg. Kylie Warren and Mychala Linzy are the other double figure scorers for the Muleriders and are averaging 11.9 and 11.0 ppg, respectively.

The Muleriders are coached by Adam Collins, who is entering his fifth season at the helm of Southern Arkansas' women's baksetball program. In his first three seasons, Collins has led the program to 24 wins including 17 victories in the 2019-20 season that saw that year's squad nearly upset top-seeded Southeastern Oklahoma State in the opening round of the GAC Tournament. Collins has amassed a 37-62 overall record as the head coach of the Muleriders.
