Golden Suns battle Harding in opening round of GAC Tournament

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The postseason has officially arrived for the Arkansas Tech volleyball team as they prepare to take on Harding in their first match of the Great American Conference Tournament.

After an 8-21 overall record and a 6-10 record in conference play, the Golden Suns enter the tournament as the No. 8 overall seed.

As for the Bisons, they boasted a near perfect overall record at 27-1 and were the first GAC team, with a full regular season schedule, since Arkansas Tech in 2017 to post a perfect conference record at 16-0. Harding enters the match as the #24 team in the country and the No. 1 overall seed in the GAC Tournament. 

During the regular season, the Bisons swept the Golden Suns in both matches the teams played against one another. 

Leading the offense for Harding is Kelli McKinnon with 305 kills on the year, while averaging 3.28 kills per set. Following her is Logan Smith with 272 kills on a 2.96 kill per set average. Skyler McKinnon is third on the team in kills with 227 total kills on the year. Pacing the Bisons offense is Sarah Morehead with 981 total assists with an 11.15 per set average. In terms of service aces,Grecia Soriano leads the team with 48. Libby Hinton adds to the mix with 40, while Emma Winiger has 36.

On defense, Winiger leads the pack with 449 digs on a 4.73 per set average. Soriano has come away with 267 digs, while Morehead has 251 on the year. In front of the net, K. McKinnon is averaging 0.98 blocks per set while collecting 15 solo blocks and 76 assisted for 91 total. Following McKinnon is Hinton with 72 blocks on the season.

Moving to the Golden Suns, Maddi Siedenburg leads the offensive attack with 215 total kills, on a 2.83 kill per set average. Following Siedenburg is Heather Thomas with 192 kills on the year while averaging 1.86 kills per set. Brianna Merkel slots in right behind Thomas with 166 kills on the season and Kaitlyn Neal has also contributed on the attack with 164 total kills on the season thus far. Pacing the offense is Gracie Palmer with 390 assists, while averaging 3.82 assists per set. Merkel averages 4.12 assists per set and has set set up 375 total assists. In terms of service aces, Jamie Myrick leads the team with 39, while Megan Solberg has 37.

Anchoring the Golden Suns on defense is Solberg with 429 digs on the year and she is averaging 4.17 digs per set. Myrick has also added plenty of help on defense with 266 total digs on a 2.61 dig per set average. Holding down the front of the net for the Golden Suns is Thomas with 15 solo blocks and 66 assisted blocks, for 81 total on the season and is averaging 0.79 blocks per set. Following behind Thomas, at the front of the net, is Lydia Hale with 32 total blocks, while Sierra Orton has 31.

The first round GAC Tournament matchup against the Bisons will be held in Shawnee, Okla. at FireLake Arena. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first serve tomorrow afternoon in Shawnee.
