ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Arkansas Tech women's basketball falls to Maryville on the road 59-62. The team moves to 1-1 overall on the season.
The Golden Suns were the first to deliver a blow on offense as a quick layup from
Jalei Oglesby quickly got the offense going. Following the bucket by Oglesby,
Kaley Shipman found her way inside for a layup to give Arkansas Tech an early 4-2 lead over the Saints.Â
A made bucket by the Saints gave them the lead, but the Golden Suns struck back with a pair of two-point buckets by Oglesby and another one from Shipman to put themselves back in front 10-7 with 4:34 left in the first quarter of play.
Arkansas Tech ended the first quarter of action strong on a 6-3 run that saw made buckets from Oglesby,
Claudia Bridges and
Dana Thompson to end the opening quarter of play on top 16-11 over Maryville.
Shipman got the offense going for Arkansas Tech in the second quarter knocking down a pair of freebies at the line.
Hayleigh Wyrick sunk the first triple of the night for the Golden Suns pushing their lead up to 21-12 with 7:59 left to play in the second quarter.
Marta Duda gave Arkansas Tech a double-digit lead at 27-15 with two back-to-back layups to continue the aggressive offense inside. The Golden Suns closed out the first half of play with with a layup from
Sarah Edmondson and a two-point jump shot from Bridges to take a 33-22 lead into the locker room at the break.Â
The Golden Suns started the third quarter of action strong once again as a pair of back-to-back layups by Oglesby and
Alex Hill pushed the lead out to 37-22.
With 6:15 left in the third quarter, the Saints began to claw their way back as they got a pair of back-to-back three-point baskets to fall to cut the Golden Sun lead down to single digits at 40-33. A successful two-for-two trip to the line for Maryville cut the lead down to just five following the three point baskets.
Bridges and Duda got the Tech offense going once again with two buckets, but the Saints continued to make good use of their trips to the free-throw line. The final two points of the third quarter would come from another pair of free throws at the line for the Saints to make it a 47-43 lead for Arkansas Tech heading into the final quarter of action.
The Saints got a few buckets to fall in the opening possessions of the final quarter leading to just a 49-48 lead for the Golden Suns, but Oglesby helped them maintain their lead with back-to-back buckets. A layup by Duda would make it a 53-48 lead for the Golden Suns with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
The Saints would tie the game up with a pair of free-throws with just 3:51 left to play in the game. Thompson and Shipman would keep the Golden Suns afloat with two point buckets to give the Golden Suns a three-point cushion with a 58-55 with 2:01 left to go.Â
The Saints would tie the game at 58-58 with a three ball. A layup and two good shots at the line for the Saints would put the game out of reach as they escaped with the 62-59 win over the Golden Suns.Â
Leading the scorers for the Golden Suns was Oglesby with a team-high 16 points. Oglesby also recorded a double-double in her outing hauling in 10 rebounds on the night as well. Following Oglesby was the pair of Shipman and Duda who each logged 10 points on the night. Duda followed Oglesby in rebounds on the night with nine.
The Golden Suns will return home to Tucker Coliseum for their next outing against Lane on Tuesday. The game against Lane is set for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
