ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Arkansas Tech Women's Basketball team picks up their third straight loss on the road against Ouachita Baptist 82-92. The Golden Suns move to 7-6 overall with a 4-5 record in Great American Conference play.
The first quarter scoring for the Golden Suns was opened up by junior forward
Nikki Metcalfe hitting one of two free throws. Following the trip to the line, sophomore guard
Kaley Shipman grabbed a steal and wasn't able to get her jumper to fall, thankfully senior guard
Tori Lasker was there to grab the offensive board and put it back up for a two point basket. With 8:26 left, Metcalfe tied the game 5-5 with a nice jumpshot from 15 feet out. The Tigers struck right back with two quick baskets to pull ahead 9-6.
Ouachita continued to control the offensive end of the floor and opened the game missing nothing as they were 9/9 on every shot taken for the first six minutes of the contest. A triple from Ouachita put them up 21-12 with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter of play. Arkansas Tech would close the quarter as the hot team ending on a 6-2 run as freshman guard
ClaraGrace Prater, Lasker and Metcalfe all connected on two point buckets to trail 18-23 heading into the second quarter of action.
The Golden Suns got right to work to start the second as freshman guard
Alex Hill fired a triple between the net to make it just a two point deficit at 21-23. A jumpshot from Shipman made it a 23-25 game. Another good inside basket from Ouachita lead to a steal for the Tigers and a fastbreak layup inside to extend the lead back out to 29-23.
Following a 6-2 run by the Tigers, Shipman knocked down a three ball to try and rally the Golden Suns back into the game. Junior guard
Ashlei Lopez would try and follow Shipman sinking a long range shot of her own as the Golden Suns still trailed by eight with 1:52 left in the first half. The Tigers would close the door on the first half scoring with a three pointer sending the teams into the locker rooms as Ouachita led 42-33 heading into the break.
The Golden Suns opened the second half with five quick points from senior guard
Jayana Sanders as she connected on a three point bucket and got a strong fastbreak layup inside to go. Both sides kept up the intense play in the third quarter going shot for shot, with Arkansas Tech slowly but surely chipping away at the lead.
Following a good trip to the line for Shipman knocking down a pair of free throws, the Golden Suns offense found a spark in their shooting down 54-61 with 2:19 left in the third. Hill and Lopez got Tech back into the game as the duo fired away a pair of back-to-back triples to cut the lead down to just one point down 60-61. Both teams ended the quarter strong from the line with a narrow 67-64 lead for Ouachita.
The Tigers started the final quarter hot with a trio of three pointers putting them back at a nine point lead as Tech tried to chip away at the lead. Sanders and Shipman played a great fourth quarter as the pair combined for 11 of the 18 points scored in the quarter for the Golden Suns. Ouachita would outscore Arkansas Tech 25-18 in the fourth quarter and take home the win 92-82.
Despite the loss, the starting five for the Golden Suns all hit double figures in scoring and were lead by Sanders with 19 total points in the game. Sanders also had five rebounds, two assists, one block and two steals to give Tech a solid game on both sides of the ball. Following Sanders was Shipman with 15 points. The sophomore guard also led Tech in rebounds with eight. Next was Metcalfe with 14 points and seven rebounds on the night. Rounding out the double figure scorers for the Golden Suns was Lasker and Lopez with 11 and 10 points scored, respectively.
The Golden Suns return home to Tucker Coliseum for their next game to face Southern Arkansas in a makeup game on Monday, January 17. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. that evening.
