Golden Suns perform well at GAC Individual Tennis Championships

Box Score RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team kicked off their 2021-22 season this past weekend as they hosted the annual GAC Individual Tennis Championships out at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.

The Golden Suns fared well at the event winning 15 singles matches and 12 doubles matches all together while also claiming four flight victories (one singles, three doubles).
 
The flight victories came at No. 7 Singles and No. 2, 3 and 4 doubles. In Flight 7 singles, Maria Krite ran the table and went an unblemished 4-0. She picked up match wins over Joee Crocker (HU), Honoka Yoshimura (SAU), Rhythm Aswal (SE) and Rachel McCrae (HU).
 
The doubles flight teams that came away with wins were Daniela Baez/Lea Grinberg (No. 2), Megan Bell/Isabella Major (No. 3) and Meaghan Butler/Maggie Holcomb (No. 4).
 
The Baez/Grinberg team started off in Flight 1 doubles and won their first match against Wallin/Simas (SAU) but dropped their second match to Kamoe/Row (HSU) to send them to Flight 2 doubles. In Flight 2, Baez and Grinberg knocked off the team of Crocker/Valenzuela (OUA) to advance to the finals of Flight 2 where they once more beat the team of Wallin/Simas (SAU).
 
Butler/Holcomb had a similar path to their flight win as they won their first match but dropped their second to send them to another flight. In flight 4 doubles, Butler/Holcomb went 3-0 with wins over Jenkins/Crocker (OUA), Aswal/Lozano (SE) and Tregubova/Nitu (SE).
 
The team of Bell/Major went unblemished in their doubles flight winning four matches en route to a Flight 3 victory. During their run, Bell/Major knocked off Johnson/Teally (HSU), Tregubova/Nitu (SE), McCrae/Nilsson (HU) and Serpukhova/Roy (SAU).
 
The Golden Suns will now prepare for their second action of the fall as they will take part in the three-day ITA Regionals held in Oklahoma City, Okla. The event will run from Friday, October 1 – Sunday, October 3.
