RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The Arkansas Tech Volleyball Team extinguishes the Reddies seven-game win streak in a dominant 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 25-17) home-court victory. The Golden Suns extend their win streak to five straight and move to 8-3 on the season, with a 2-0 conference record.
Leading the charge offensively for Arkansas Tech was senior outside hitter Tymber Riley with 18 kills. Following Riley was senior right-side hitter Haylee Paladini with 15 kills. Paladini's 15 kills in the match set a new season-high for the right-side hitter. Pacing the offense for the Golden Suns was junior setter Brianna Merkel racking up a stellar 41 assists, which sets a new season-high.
Leading the defensive effort for Tech was senior libero Madison Grantham coming up with an impressive 30 digs, setting a new season-high. Tymber Riley and freshman libero Jamie Myrick also contributed defensively with 16 digs each. Leading the match in blocks for the Golden Suns was junior outside hitter Kaitlynn Bradley with 4 total blocks, 3 assisted and 1 solo.
A pair of opening kills from Tymber Riley and Brianna Merkel along with two bad sets by the Reddies gave Tech an early 4-3 lead in the first set. Things began to heat up as both teams went back and forth. A 6-1 run by the Golden Suns fueled by a few errors by Henderson and a trio of kills from Tymber Riley and Haylee Paladini pushed Tech to a comfortable 17-12 lead. Tech would close the first set in a 5-1 run capped off with a kill by Tymber Riley to take a 25-17 win.
The Golden Suns opened the second set strong with a 6-2 run fueled by five kills, two from Kaitlynn Bradley and three from Tymber Riley, to take an early 6-3 lead. Tech continued to battle with Henderson still holding the lead, even with comeback attempts by the Reddies. The Golden Suns closed the second set out with three kills from Addison Masters and Haylee Paladini to win 25-19.
Going into the third set Henderson jumped out early with a slight 6-4 advantage over Tech. However, multiple errors would cost the Reddies and put the Golden Suns back on top 9-7. Henderson was not ready to give up yet clawing back to lead 13-11. Tech would battle back to tie it up at 18 with a kill from Haylee Paladini. More errors would cost Henderson as Tech took a 24-23 lead. The Reddies stormed back to extend and win the set 24-26.
In the fourth and final set, Tech jumped out to an 11-7 opening lead capped off by two kills from Haylee Paladini and Addison Masters. The Golden Suns continued to take complete control of the set with three kills from Tymber Riley and a kill from freshman middle blocker Olivia Crowl to lead the Reddies 18-11. Henderson would go on a 4-0 run to try and close the gap with Tech still leading 18-15. The Golden Suns would dominate the rest of the set ending on a 7-2 run to claim victory in the match with a 25-17 final set score.
The Golden Suns will travel to Magnolia, Ark. on Thursday, September 23 for a GAC matchup against Southern Arkansas. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start.
