RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team opened up the Great American Conference portion of their schedule with a 5-2 win over Henderson State on Friday afternoon out at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.
The Golden Suns (5-3, 1-0 GAC) got off to a great start in the match as they claimed the doubles point thanks to wins at flights No. 1 and No. 3. The top-flight doubles duo of
Michelle Khoo and
Aastha Dargude were first to secure a victory as they won their match 6-1. The No. 3 flight duo of
Megan Bell and
Isabella Major then sealed the doubles point for the Golden Suns with a 6-4 win.
Lea Grinberg and
Daniela Baez were narrowly edged in their No. 2 doubles match losing 7-6 (5).
The momentum from the doubles point carried over into singles play as the Golden Suns ripped off the first four matches to clinch the team victory.
Baez at No. 4 singles was first to finish as she surrendered just two games in her match. Grinberg then made it 3-0 Tech as she won at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-3. Khoo, at the top-flight, secured the match for the Golden Suns as she eased past her opponent 6-2, 6-2.
The final point for the Golden Suns in the match came at No. 3 singles as Dargude won 6-1, 6-4.
The Golden Suns will return to the court on Saturday morning as they are set to take on Nebraska-Kearney in a non-conference match starting at 10 a.m.
