MONTICELLO, Ark. – With two outs and a runner in scoring position,
Caitlyn Wells stepped up and knocked a double, putting the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns up 6-4 going into the final inning. Wells hit proved to be enough as the Golden Suns took down the Cotton Blossoms in game one of the three-game series.
The Golden Suns take the field again on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at noon.
The first inning of play went scoreless, as both teams struggled to get anyone on base.
Brooke Prewitt led off the inning, reaching on a fielding error but the Golden Suns were unable to convert.
Maddy Prough struckout three of her next four batters in the second before a slew of walks led to
Paty Loredo scoring, putting the Golden Suns up 1-0 after two innings.
Neither team scored in the third inning. The Cotton Blossoms got on the board after a homer to left field in the top of the fourth.
Makenzie Addis answered back, launching the first pitch deep past center field, putting the Golden Suns up 2-1.
Arkansas-Monticello put up three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the inning. The Golden Suns were able to get things going in the bottom of the fifth, after
Tymber Riley knocked a double to start the inning and Loredo got hit by a pitch.
Makenzie Goins brought in Riley and
Arissa Harrish, a pinch runner for Loredo, with a triple to left center, tying the game at 4-4.
The Cotton Blossoms went scoreless in the sixth.
Destiny Sanders pinch hit for
Morgan Page and drew a walk before Page subbed back in to run. A single from
Brooke Prewitt put Page in scoring position before a two-out double from Wells brought in the two runners to take a 6-4 lead. Wells hit proved to be enough for the Golden Suns to seal a game-one victory.
Prough pitched the first 4.1 innings, striking out seven and allowing four runs off six hits.
Robyn Bales came in relief, going 2.2 innings, not allowing a run on two hits and striking out three while picking up the win. Loredo and Addis posted two hits each with Addis launching the Golden Suns one homerun of the game. Wells and Goins picked up two RBIs apiece.
