Golden Suns Grab First GAC Road Win of the Season Against Arkansas-Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. - Following their GAC opener victory against Ouachita Baptist in Tucker Coliseum on Thursday night, the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns followed with another win on the road against Arkansas-Monticello 72-66 to end the opening week of GAC play a perfect 2-0. 

Senior guard Jayana Sanders opened the scoring for Arkansas Tech with a quick layup inside to strike the board first. Arkansas-Monticello opened their scoring with a three pointer from Hayley Flores. The Golden Suns fired right back as sophomore guard Kaley Shipman knocked down a three ball of her own putting them back on top of the Cotton Blossoms 5-3. Following a missed three by Bailey Harris, senior forward Sydnee Wynn caught an outlook pass from senor guard Tori Lasker for a strong layup in the paint to extend the lead with 6:37 left in the first quarter. A foul by Tech followed a made basket from UAM giving them a chance for a three point play, which they converted to cut the lead to just 10-8. Junior Forward Nikki Metcalfe sunk a two point jumper to give the Golden Suns some breathing room holding a 12-8 lead. A layup from Lasker would close the first quarter scoring for Tech ending with a 18-17 lead.

Entering the second quarter of play, Wynn went one for two at the line. The Cotton Blossoms tied the game at 19-19 with a layup from Flores. Shipman gave the lead back to the Golden Suns with a nice two point jumper. Arkansas-Monticello made a quick 4-0 run to put them back on top leading Tech 25-21 with 7:34 left in the first half. Shipman once again came up big for the Golden Suns with a layup inside and nice three point basket to tie the game at 27 a piece. Junior guard Ashlei Lopez gave the lead back to the Golden Suns with a layup and Sanders extended the lead with a layup of her own to make it a 31-29 lead with 2:03 left in the second quarter. Wynn finished the first half of play strong for Arkansas Tech with two layups inside to give them a 35-33 heading into the break.

After closing the first half strong for the Golden Suns, Wynn continued her strong inside presence with another good two point basket down low with Shipman right behind her with her own two pointer to push the lead to 39-35. A two pointer from Lasker, a layup from Wynn and a jumper from Metcalfe continued the offense performance for the Golden Suns. Arkansas Tech got their first double digit lead of the game with 3:51 left in the third quarter thanks to Shipman knocking down a shot from beyond the arc. A steal from Harris set up the fastbreak jump shot for Flores cutting the lead back down to single digits for UAM at 50-41. Lopez found a steal late in the third quarter that allowed her to go coast-to-coast all the way inside for a strong layup on the fastbreak to to put the Golden Suns back up by double digits with a 54-44 lead. Tech ended the third quarter with a 56-49 lead.

Lopez started the scoring effort for Tech in the final quarter of action with a layup and two made free throws following a foul by Arkansas-Monticello. The Golden Suns continued their excellent performance at the line with Shipman knocking down two more. A layup by Flores with 3:14 left in the game cut the lead to 10 points for UAM. A made free throw from Taylor East on the and one opportunity cut into the Golden Sun lead once again. A three point basket from Alexys Grice had Arkansas Tech holding on by a thread with only a four point lead and 1:45 left to go. A good free throw from Lopez and a steal leading to a layup for Sanders gave the Golden Suns the edge to win the game however 72-66.

Shipman was the leader on the floor for the Golden Suns with 23 points, shooting 50% from the floor. Shipman also added six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Following Shipman was Wynn with 14 points making six of her eight shots fall from the floor. Wynn had four rebounds, two blocks and a steal as well. Lopez had a great afternoon from the line making 7-10 free throws to end with 13 points, a team leading seven rebounds, one assist and two steals. Closing out the double figure scorers for Tech was Lasker with 10 points. The senior guard also grabbed three boards and three assists.

The Golden Suns get some rest before their next matchup against Henderson State on Saturday, December 11 in Arkadelphia. The game against the Reddies is scheduled for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
