RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – A 35-point first half by the Arkansas Tech football team propelled the Wonder Boys to a 56-21 rout victory over visiting Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon out at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.
Not much did not go the way of the Wonder Boys (4-6, 4-6 GAC) in the game as Tech controlled every facet of play throughout. On offense, the Wonder Boys racked up 458 yards of total offense with an eye-popping 256 of those yards coming on the ground. The total offense mark was the second-most this season while the rushing total was the most.
In the running game, the Wonder Boys used a two-headed attack that saw
Ron Thompson and
Keon Simmons each eclipse the 100-yard mark on the ground. That marked the first time since 2017 that a pair of Wonder Boys running backs rushed for over 100 yards. The previous time saw Braden Stringer and Bryan Allen achieve the feat against Southeastern Oklahoma.
In the passing game, the Wonder Boys did not take too many chances down field, but were efficient and methodical through the air completing 20-of-30 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Much of that was attributed to
Jack Lindsey as he threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-26 passing.
Of those 20 completions, 11 different Wonder Boys made a reception.
Mason Ross had the most yard with 63 on three receptions.
Joyrion Chase and
Drew Wade each caught four passes. Chase went for 49 yards and a score.
Adam Cousins and
Caleb Stokes hauled in the other two TD passes.
Defensively, the Wonder Boys surrendered a few big plays, but overall were solid. They came away with three take-a-ways with a pair of fumble recoveries and an interception. They also held the Rangers (1-9, 1-9 GAC) to just 23:00 of possession and 5-of-11 success on third down and 0-of-1 on fourth down.
A total of 22 different Wonder Boys registered a tackle in the game.
Alex Chambers led the way with five.
Matthew Minnix,
De'Veyon Smith and
Trey White all registered sacks. Minnix and
Matt Arnold were responsible for the forced fumbles while
Dio Williams had the interception.
The Wonder Boys will now set their sights on playing spoiler in their regular season finale next Saturday. That day, the Wonder Boys will take on nationally-ranked Harding with a kick-off scheduled for 2 p.m. The Bisons will enter the game looking for at least a share of the GAC Regular Season title at 9-1. About 30 minutes prior to kickoff, the Wonder Boys will celebrate this year's seniors.
