Golden Suns Bounce Back With 13 Point Win Against Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas - After a tough three point loss against Texas Woman's University on Friday afternoon, the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns bounce right back with a solid double digit 13 point win against Angelo State on Saturday night. An impressive 34 point third quarter helped fuel the Golden Suns to a victory. The Golden Suns move to 3-1 overall on the season with this win.

The Golden Suns opened their first offensive possession of the evening strong with junior guard Ashlei Lopez knocking down a three point basket to put Arkansas Tech on the board. Lopez scored 10 of the 13 total points in the first quarter for the Golden Suns. Sophomore forward Marija Bakic hit a free throw to tie the game 11-11 with 3:26 left in the first quarter. A jumper made by Madeline Stephens of Angelo State gave them a 13-11 lead, but Tech came right back down the floor with their own two point jumper from junior forward Sydnee Wynn to tie the game once again 13-13. Angelo state would close out the quarter with two layups to take a 17-13 lead after one. 

The Belles continued their scoring to start the second with Stephens and Ashlynn Sharp scoring layups to take 21-13 lead over the Golden Suns. Tech finally found the bottom of the basket with sophomore guard Kaley Shipman burying a three pointer to make it 21-16. Two layups from Lopez and senior guard Jayana Sanders cut into the Belles lead even more making it a 25-20 lead. Angelo State found a quick 5-0 run with a jumper from Sharp and a three pointer from Samantha Rocha to put the lead back in double digits with just under four minutes left in the first half. Shipman scored the last basket of the half for the Golden Suns off a layup with 1:08 left. Tech went into the break down 26-34.

The third quarter was a different story for the Golden Suns and it was apparent from the opening second. Arkansas Tech opened the third quarter with an 13-2 run. Leading the charge was Wynn scoring seven of the 13 points, while Shipman had two strong layups for four points and Lopez poured in the other two points in the run to finally put Tech back on top 39-28 over Angelo State. Two layups from senior guard Tori Lasker and Shipman extended the Golden Sun lead to 43-38. The Golden Suns made good use of their free throws during the third quarter knocking down all six free throw attempts from the line. Another strong layup inside from Wynn continued the third quarter dominance for Tech as they pushed the lead to 53-44. A steal by Shipman set up a quick fast break three pointer for the sophomore guard giving Tech a double digit lead with 1:07 left in the third. Junior forward Nikki Metcalfe got a mid range jumper to fall with two second remaining in the third to give the Golden Suns a good 60-46 lead heading into the final quarter of action.

The Belles opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to five for the Golden Suns. A two point basket from Lopez and one from sophomore forward Anna Meyers got Arkansas Tech going in the fourth putting the lead back to 66-59. Two layups from Sanders pushed the lead back up to nine with 3:21 left in the game. The Golden Suns would close out the fourth quarter with three layup from Lopez, Shipman and Wynn and walk away with the 76-63 road victory over Angelo State.

Leading the way for the Golden Suns was Lopez with 22 points. Lopez made the most of her opportunities at the stripe going 4-4 on free throws and was one of four members of the Golden Suns to shoot perfect from the line in the game. The junior guard also grabbed six boards, three assists and three steals. Following Lopez was Shipman with 18 points and shooting 50% from three (2-4). Shipman also pulled down seven rebounds and came up with three steals. Closing out the leading scorers for the Golden Suns was Wynn with 13 points shooting 60% from the floor (6-10). The junior forward also contributed with seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Sanders had a solid night distributing the ball for Tech with a team high six assists in the game and also came up with three big steals.

The Golden Suns return home to Tucker Coliseum for their next outing against Ouachita Baptist next Thursday on December 2. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. that evening.
