RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The Arkansas Tech Volleyball team continues their dominant play at home with a 3-0 afternoon sweep (25-14, 28-26, 25-22) to lift them over Southeastern Oklahoma. The Golden Suns move to 16-4 overall with a 10-1 record among conference games. Tech also remains undefeated when playing at home in Tucker Coliseum with a 7-0 record. The sweep against Southeastern is their third sweep of the season in Tucker.
Leading the offense was junior outside hitter Kaitlynn Bradley with 11 kills in the match at an impressive .429 clip. Bradley also notched a service ace. Senior outside hitter Tymber Riley followed with 7 kills and senior right-side hitter Haylee Paladini had 5. Pacing the offense was junior setter Brianna Merkel with 21 assists.Â
The defensive effort by the Golden Suns was led by senior libero Madison Grantham and junior libero Megan Solberg with 11 digs each. Holding down the front line for Tech was Paladini who notched the team-leading 4 blocks in the match. Senior middle blocker Emily Ragsdale and Merkel also did well with 2 blocks each.
The Golden Suns started strong taking 9 of the first 12 points in the set. A single kill from both Bradley and Ragsdale extended Tech's lead 13-6 in the first set. The Golden Suns found a 6-0 run late in the set, fueled by a trio of kills from Riley to give them a commanding 21-10 lead. An error by Southeastern and two kills from Bradley would end the set and give Tech a 25-14 first set win.
The second set began with both sides refusing to give up costly runs. After a 3-0 run by Southeastern to tie the set at 12 apiece, Tech found themselves a 3-0 run to pull ahead 15-12. The Golden Suns quickly found another run, this time 4-0, off a kill from Ragsdale and Bradley with a pair of kills from Evelyn Fitz to hold a 21-16 lead. Tech gave themselves a shot to close the set 24-23, but Southeastern would tie it at 24 to extend the set. Southeastern would cause their own demise in the set ending with two costly errors that gave Tech a 28-26 second set win and set up for the sweep.
Tech opened the third and final in dominant fashion taking an early 10-5 capped off by a kill from Olivia Crowl. Another kill by Crowl and one from Abby Simpson would make it a 15-7 lead for the Golden Suns. Tech would grow the lead even further with a pair of kills from Simpson and one from Paladini to make it a 20-10 lead. Arkansas Tech took a big 23-15 lead down the stretch following an ace from Solberg and it looked like it would be an easy closeout. However, the Savage Storm weren't going down without a fight winning 7 of the next 8 points to cut the Golden Sun lead to just two at 24-22. A service error by Southeastern would end the set and the match giving the Golden Suns a 25-22 final set victory, earning them their tenth sweep of the season.
The Golden Suns hit the road for a short trip to Springfield, Mo. on Tuesday, October 26 for their next match against Drury. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start.
