OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns tennis team's duo of
Annabel Rowlands and
Kami Ward advanced in doubles play, while
Haeleigh Long advanced in singles play in the first day of the ITA Regionals being held in Oklahoma City on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rowlands and Ward, the No. 23 seed, defeated the No. 24 seed Mayra Jovic and Karla Tomaic of Northeastern State 9-7 to advance to the Round of 16.
- In group A singles play, No. 4 seed Katharina Drebka defeated No. 3 seed Laura Jimenez of Fort Hays State 6-1, 6-1, but fell in the next round 6-2, 6-2 to No. 1 seed Kornelia Staniszewska of Augustana.
- In group B singles play, No. 46 seed Long defeated No. 45 seed Jaquenline Chavert of Oklahoma Baptist 6-1, 6-2.
- Seniors Annabel Rowlands and Teresa Sanchez both suffered opening round losses, but rallied and secured victories in the consolation bracket.
- No. 20 seed Sanchez dropped the opening match 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 to No. 19 seed Karla Tomic of Northeastern State. Sanchez advanced in the consolation bracket after defeating No. 18 seed Natalia Lubbers of Fort Hays State 6-2, 6-3.
- No. 51 seed Rowlands fell 6-4, 6-2 to No. 52 seed Constanca Crespo of Southwest Baptist. Rowlands advanced in the consolation bracket after defeating No. 50 seed Lauren Lindell of Fort Hays State 6-1, 6-3.
