RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - After starting the season with 20 games away from home, the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns softball team finally caught a respite from the road this past weekend with its first four games of the year at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.
That respite will come to an end as the Golden Suns (18-6, 9-3 Great American Conference) become road warriors once again, traveling to Bethany, Okla. for a four-game set with Southern Nazarene (7-13, 4-6).
Friday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader is set for a noon start.
A trio of Golden Suns starters are pushing the .400 threshold through 24 games of the season, as
Bailey Bunch (.397),
Sydnie Henson (.394) and
Ashton Sangster (.391) have all provided some their share of offense for Arkansas Tech. Sangster is also one of seven Golden Suns players to go deep this season, as the team has a three-way tie for first with four home runs between
Paige Mendoza,
Megan Goodnight, and
Sarah Coronado.
Meanwhile, Goodnight has found a way to get things done inside the pitcher's circle as well. The junior leads Tech with a 0.58 ERA, and has notched a 5-0 record with six saves. Goodnight's six saves already rank as a new Arkansas Tech single-season record, surpassing the trio of
Morgan Vaughan (2017), Dana Aldrich (2008), and Casey Hammons (2008), who each notched five-save seasons. Goodnight's six career saves rank her fourth in Arkansas Tech history, and she sits just two saves behind Kelsie Barker (2015-16) for third all-time in the Golden Suns' record book.
Also making moves in the softball record book are
Janie Knowles, who ranks ninth all-time at Arkansas Tech with 496 career at-bats and could pass Roxie Palacios (500 at-bats, 2008-10) and
Ashley Savage (502 at-bats, 2014-16) this weekend. Knowles is also tied for eighth all-time at Tech with 140 career hits, and is three behind Terrise Williams (2003-06) for seventh all-time.
Southern Nazarene's unquestioned offensive leader thus far this season has been RIley Brown. With a .377 batting average, Brown has racked up a GAC-best 10 doubles and is slugging .717. Caitlyn Curlee leads SNU with six homers, and ranks third in the league with 25 RBIs.
Senior hurler Katelyn Brown leads the GAC with 71 strikeouts, and is 4-7 this season with a 3.86 ERA.
