GOLDEN SUNS CLAIM THREE TITLES AT GAC INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team concluded a successful weekend at the Great American Conference Individual Championships on Sunday as Annabel Rowlands, Haeleigh Long, and Alejandra Sanchez picked up individual flight championships while the duo of A. Sanchez and Katharina Drebka picked up the Flight 3/4 doubles championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Annabel Rowlands claimed the Flight 5 singles championship as she defeated Serena Gill (SAU) 6-2, 6-4.
  • Both Katharina Drebka and Teresa Sanchez advanced to the Flight 1 singles consolation semifinals. Drebka defeated India Shiaelis (SE) 8-5 and T. Sanchez defeated Chiara Berg (SE) 8-4.
  • Kami Ward and Katie Harris each made in to the consolation finals as Harris ended the GAC Individual Championships with a pair of wins as she defeated Allison Jenkins (HU) 8-2 and Erin Young (HU) 8-4 in Flight 6 singles. While Ward defeated Lena Milosevic (SAU) 8-4, but fell 8-6 to Lorish Puluspene (HSU) in Flight 3 singles.
  • Both Alejandra Sanchez and Haeleigh Long began the day with semifinals matches where A. Sanchez defeated Landry Johnson (OKB) 6-0, 6-0, while Long defeated Cassie Berrier (HSU) 6-1, 6-0. A. Sanchez and Long were named Flight 7 singles co-champions.
  • In doubles play, Kami Ward and Rowlands advanced to the Flight 1/2 doubles semifinals, but lost 6-1 to Boeppla/Moosbacher (OKB).  
  • Teresa Sanchez and Megan Bell defeated Milosevic/Gill (SAU) 7-5 to advance to the Flight 1/2 doubles consolation finals where they beat Folse/L. Carpenter (HU) 6-3.
  • The pair of Katie Harris and Haeleigh Long defeated Young/Ivanova (HU) 6-1 to advance to the Flight 3/4 doubles consolation finals where they fell 6-3 to A. Carpenter/E. Carpenter (HU).
  • A. Sanchez and Drebka defeated Jenkins/Shaw (HU) 6-0 to advance to the Flight 3/4 finals where they defeated Varon/Walsh (OKB) 6-2 to claim the Flight 3/4 doubles championship.

  • Arkansas Tech has concluded its fall portion of the 2018-19 season and will return to action in the spring.
