WONDER BOYS HOLD OFF SAVAGE STORM

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. R.J. Glasper and Montrell Williams combined for 35 points to lead the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (12-6, 6-6 Great American Conference) to a thrilling 72-65 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State (9-8, 8-4) on Thursday night at Tucker Coliseum.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Williams scored the first points of the game, Southeastern scored eight of the next ten points to take an early advantage in the opening minutes of the game. The Savage Storm led 8-4 at the 17:14 minute mark. SOSU then used a 7-5 run to take a 15-9 lead with a little over 15 minutes remaining in the opening half.
  • From there, the Wonder Boys used a 13-2 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from RJ Glasper, Freddy Lee and Mason Cline to give Tech a 22-17 lead with 10:10 remaining in the half.
  • Josiah Thomas helped Tech build a seven point lead as he scored four straight points to give the Wonder Boys a 26-19 lead with just under eight minutes left in the first half.
  • The Savage Storm battled back with a run of their own, scoring six of the game's next eight points to pull within three (28-25).
  • The Wonder Boys pushed ahead again, ending the first half on an 8-4 run to set the Tech lead at 36-29 at the break.
  • A 15-4 run to open the second half gave the Savage Storm a 44-40 advantage with 15:55 to play. An Alex Brown layup cut the lead to two (44-42), but Southeastern pushed the lead back to five (47-42) after Kevin Buckingham hit three free throws.
  • Tech gained momentum after a Williams layup sparked a 11-1 run to give the Wonder boys a five point advantage (53-48) at the 9:46 minute mark.
  • Tech stretched its lead to nine (66-57) with 2:57 to play, but the Savage Storm used an 8-2 advantage to pull to within three (68-65) and force a timeout with 28 seconds to play.
  • Glasper scored the final four points of the game, going a perfect 4-for-4 to put the game on ice and give the Wonder Boys the victory.
NOTABLES
  • The win moves the Wonder Boys to 12-6 on the season with a 6-6 record in conference play. Tech currently sits in a tie sixth in the GAC standings.
  • Three Wonder Boys reached double-figures, Glasper's 18 points led all players, Williams added 17 points, while Brown chipped 13 points.
  • Southeastern shot 46.4 percent, while holding the Wonder Boys to 43.9 percent.
  • Tech out rebounded Southeastern 33-32, the Savage Storm outscored Tech 28-26 in points in the paint.
  • The Wonder Boys forced 14 turnovers and scored 19 points off those turnovers.
  • Lee led Tech in rebounding with six boards.
  • The Wonder Boys made the most of their trips to the charity stripe, connecting on 16-of-18 attempts.
  • In his first game as a Wonder Boy, Zane King scored four points, added three rebounds, an assist and a block.

  • The Wonder Boys return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, hosting East Central in a Great American Conference matchup in Tucker Coliseum. A 3 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.
