GOLDEN SUNS RALLY TO DOWN OUACHITA IN GAC TOURNEY OPENER

Box Score BARTLESVILLE, Okla.Anissa Pounds had a 15-point, six-rebound, six-assist effort as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns basketball team (21-6) staged a furious fourth-quarter rally to top Ouachita Baptist (12-17) in the opening round of the Great American Conference championship tournament on Thursday at Bruin Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening quarter saw Ouachita outshoot Tech 44.4 percent to 37.5 percent.
  • OBU led by as many as four (13-9) at the 4:43 mark before the Golden Suns rallied, taking a brief lead (18-16) at the 1:00 mark after a Calli White 3-pointer.
  • Ouachita reclaimed the lead and carried a 20-18 advantage into the second quarter.
  • Tech tied the contest on the opening possession of the second quarter on a Pounds layup, and the two teams traded leads over the opening minutes of the quarter.
  • After a Pounds layup gave Tech the lead (26-24) with 5:19 to play, OBU went on a 7-0 run to claim a five-point advantage with 2:18 to go until half.
  • OBU stretched its lead to as many as nine (39-30) before Kelsey McClure hit a free throw in the closing seconds to pull Tech to within eight (39-31) at the half.
  • The Golden Suns were able to close to within four three times in the third quarter, last at the 3:38 mark (47-43) but OBU was able to carry a six-point advantage into the fourth quarter.
  • Tech opened the fourth-quarter on an 11-0 run to take a five-point lead (56-51) with 6:58 remaining, and outscored the Tigers 18-3 over the first six minutes of the half to stretch the lead into double figures (65-54) with 4:04 to play.
  • The Tigers cut the Golden Suns lead into single digits after a three-point play, but Calli White answered with a 3-pointer to stretch the lead back to double figures with 1:02 to play and Arkansas Tech never looked back.
NOTABLES
  • Pounds was one of five Golden Suns to reach double figures in points, as Kelsey McClure (14 points), Danielle Frachiseur (13 points), Cheyenne North (13 points), and Calli White (10 points) also hit the mark.
  • North led all players with eight boards, adding four assists and four turnovers as well.
  • Tech and OBU were even in rebounds at 38-38.
  • Tech outscored Ouachita 42-28 in the paint, 14-3 off turnovers, 16-8 on second-chance baskets, and 6-4 on fast-break points.
  • There were eight ties and five lead changes.
