ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Despite a pair of career-high performances, the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys dropped their fifth consecutive game of the season with an 89-80 loss at Henderson State Thursday night at the Duke Wells Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED- The game started out with a high scoring affair as both teams combined for 30 points in the first 5:37. The Wonder Boys led early with 7-5 lead with two Andrew Guillory free throws. The Reddies responded with an 8-4 run, but Tech answered back with a 6-0 run capped off on a DeChriston McKinney layup to take a 17-13 lead.
- The Wonder Boys took their biggest lead of the first half on a Freddy Lee three-pointer with 12:35 to go to expand the lead to 25-18.
- With a 36-30 lead and 5:03 to go in the first half, Henderson State went on 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 40-36 lead.
- The Wonder Boys responded with a 6-1 run to end the half on layups by Nick Wayman and Guillory as well as a pair of Lee free throws with 15 seconds to go to give Tech a 42-41 lead at the half.
- After jumping out to a six point lead in the second half on a Wayman three-pointer to make it 48-42 with 17:56 left, the Reddies went on a 22-9 run to take a 64-57 lead over the Wonder Boys with 11:28 to go.
- The Reddies picked up their biggest lead of the game at 73-59 with 7:24 left, but the Wonder Boys responded with a 10-2 run to cut the Henderson State lead to 75-69 on a Lee three-pointer.
- However, Tech could not climb any closer than six points the rest of the way as Henderson State closed out the game for the 89-80 win.
NOTABLES- Despite the loss, the Wonder Boys got a couple of career-best performances. Guillory scored a career-best with the Wonder Boys with 20 points on 6-of-15 shooting and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. In his first career start, Lee scored a career-best 19 points on 5-of-15 shooting, going 5-for-13 from the three-point arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
- Tyler Corley scored in double-figures for the fifth-straight game with 12 points on 4-for-9 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
- The Wonder Boys had their best performance from the free throw line of the season, shooting a perfect 21-of-21 from the charity stripe.
- It was the second consecutive game than an opponent shot 60-percent or better from the three-point arc against the Wonder Boys as HSU knocked down 13-of-19 (68-percent) of their three-point shot.
WHO'S NEXTArkansas Tech will return home to Tucker Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 23, as the Wonder Boys will take on Arkansas-Monticello. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
