ALVA, Okla. —
Whitney Robinson and
Kambri Hill each posted three hits on the day, but the Arkansas Tech softball couldn't solve Northwestern Oklahoma, suffering a pair of one-run losses to wrap up a four-game Great American Conference series Friday afternoon, falling 3-2 and 6-5.
Robinson also scored two runs, while
Alicia Lowrey and
Ashley Savage each knocked in a pair of runs as the Golden Suns (28-10, 15-7 GAC) wrapped up a three-day, four-state road trip.
Tech got on board quickly to start the day off, as Robinson singled through the right side, stole second and was knocked home by
Jalissa Gum's double to right center. That lead didn't last long though, as the Rangers (17-20, 12-14 GAC) put together three straight singles to start the bottom of the first and scored a pair of runs to make it 2-1. The hosts netted an all-important insurance run in the fourth, which helped them maintain the lead as Savage blasted a home run to center in the top of the seventh to pull the Suns to within one with one out, but Tech couldn't scrape across the tying run, dropping the first one-run contest of the day.
The second game started much like the first, as Robinson singled to start things off and stole second, this time coming around to score as
Courtney Colunga reached on an error. One again, the Rangers took the lead right back in the bottom half, this time benefitting from two Tech errors to grab a 2-1 lead after one inning. The Suns would bounce back in the third, as Gum started with a bunt single and Lowrey knocked a one-out pitch over the wall in right to give Tech the lead once again at 3-2. An
Alex Edinger single, followed a few batters later by Robinson's RBI single, made the score 4-2 in the top of the fourth, but Northwestern answered in the bottom of the inning, with three hits to start the frame and a sac fly making it 5-4.
The Golden Suns would once again respond, as Hill slipped a single through the right side with two out in the top of the fifth, stole second, and scored easily on Savage's double to tie things up. Unfortunately, a home run in the bottom of the inning for the Rangers gave them a lead that they wouldn't give up.
Morgan Vaughan suffered the loss in Game 1, allowing eight hits, and three runs while striking out a pair over 3 1/3 innings.
Victoria Huie took the loss in the nightcap despite holding the Rangers to six hits and a lone walk, allowing four earned runs over five innings.
Sydnee Clark came in in relief in both games, allowing a single hit and one walk while striking out four over 3 2/3 combined innings.
The Golden Suns next travel to Searcy, Arkansas to close out their season series against Harding, playing a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
