Box Score 2 RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. —
Ashley Savage posted three big hits and the Arkansas Tech softball team pulled out two dramatic wins Sunday afternoon at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-5 win over Southern Nazarene in the opener and turning around to score four in the seventh and walk off in a 5-4 win in the nightcap to close the Great American Conference series.
Savage hit a pair of home runs, totaling three RBIs, in Game 1, while her lone hit in the second game was the biggest one of them all, as she was able to get a bloop to drop in behind the infield with the bases loaded and one out in a tie game in the bottom of the seventh, plating
Janie Knowles and ending the regular season with a win for the Golden Suns (37-18, 22-14 GAC).
Jalissa Gum added a 3-for-3 game in the nightcap, while
Kambri Hill went 2-for-2, and
Sydnee Clark earned a save and a win on the day as Tech sealed a fourth-place finish in the GAC with the wins over the Crimson Storm (19-27, 15-20 GAC).
The longball was working early and often in the opener for the Golden Suns. Savage was responsible for a big part of it, handing the hosts the first lead of the day with a line shot just inside the foul pole down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the second inning. She increased the lead in the fourth, blasting a two-run home run after
Whitney Robinson worked a one-out walk, upping the advantage to 3-0.
Senior
Victoria Huie drew the start, and despite a jam that had the bases loaded in the top of the first, she got out of that and at one point retired 10 batters in a row, sitting down the Crimson Storm in order in the second, third and fourth innings. The guests were able to take the lead with a big inning in the fifth, plating five runs to grab a two-run cushion entering the final two innings, but the Suns did not go quietly.
After putting a pair of runners on but not getting a run in the bottom of the fifth, Tech started out the sixth nearly the same way. Robinson led off the frame with a walk, and Savage was hit by a pitch before the pair was moved up into scoring position by a
Shanna Davidson sacrifice bunt.
Miranda Dupree followed with a groundout to the right side to push Robinson home and get within a run, and Courtney Reeves launched a two-run shot to left center that gave the Suns the lead once again. With the bases clear,
Alex Edinger legged out a triple on a shot to the left field corner and scored when
Janie Knowles beat out an infield single to make it 7-5 after a four-run inning.
Kelsie Barker relieved Huie in the fifth, earning the victory by tossing 1 2/3 innings, allowing a pair of hits and a walk but no runs. Clark tossed a perfect seventh inning to grab her first save of the year, preserving the Suns' lead.
Clark stayed right in the circle to start Game 2, working out of a couple jams without allowing a hit through the first two innings before the Storm plated three in the top of the third to jump out to a lead, two of those scoring after an error extended the inning. She finished the game scattering six hits and three walks, allowing four runs, just two earned, and striking out three, picking up her 11th win of the season after her team's heroics in the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth,
Samantha Herweck scampered home on a passed ball for Tech's first run of the game, but SNU added one in the top of the seventh to keep the deficit at three runs. As the bottom of the seventh got started, the first six Suns reached base, as
Courtney Colunga doubled to open the inning, followed by singles from Davidson and Edinger. With the bases loaded, Knowles knocked a single up the middle, and the throw from the centerfielder in an attempt to retire Davidson at third went wild, making the score 4-3. Hill made it five straight hits when her single to right tied it up, and Gum was intentionally walked before Savage ended it.
The Golden Suns are back in action in the Great American Conference tournament, beginning with a game against fifth-seeded Harding at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Tiger Athletic Complex in Bentonville, Arkansas.
