BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Despite taking a 2-1 lead after doubles play, the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns tennis team was unable to overpower East Central in singles play, dropping a 5-4 contest to the Tigers in the semifinals of the Great American Conference tournament on Friday.
The tandem of
Bohdana Sardak and
Olga Leyshyna were 8-2 winners over Julia Municoy and Elisabeth Dignard at No. 1 doubles and
Tamara Bell and
Camila Roca captured an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over the Tiger duo of Gloria Mayorga and Virginie Rodriguez, but
Vandella Suico and
Laura Sanchez were upended 8-6 at No. 3 doubles to prevent the Tech sweep of the doubles points.
Suico raced to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Mijares, but ECU came back with wins at No. 4 and No. 1, as Mayorga downed Sanchez 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 and Municoy downed Bell 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 to pull the Tigers even at 3-3. A 7-5, 6-3 win by Leyshyna at No. 3 singles over Dignard gave Tech a 4-3 advantage, but a 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory by Srijita Ghosh over Roca at No. 5 tied the match at 4-4.
The Tigers sealed the match with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win by Bernardita Muscillo over Sardak at No. 2 singles.
The Golden Suns await their NCAA tournament fate, to be announced Tuesday. The top seven teams from the Central Region, respective of automatic bids, will advance to NCAA tourney play. Tech was ranked No. 4 in the most recent poll.
