WONDER BOYS SWEEP FIRST-PLACE HARDING, EARN BERTH TO GAC TOURNEY

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.Trent Armstrong twirled a gem in the opener, going the distance and scattering ten hits and allowing two runs, fanning six, while Rafiel Johnson turned in a solid performance in the nightcap, allowing just one run in five innings of work as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys baseball team (29-19, 15-10 Great American Conference) picked up a doubleheader sweep of first-place Harding (26-22, 17-9 GAC), winning the opener 5-2 and taking a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

Harding jumped on the board first in the second inning, when a well-placed bunt single by Shane Kinnear allowed the first run of the game to scamper home. However, Armstrong would hold the Bisons off the board through the middle innings, and the Wonder Boys claimed the lead in the sixth inning, when Cole Fergus smashed a three-run homer to give Tech a 3-1 advantage.

An RBI single by Collin O' Neil later in the frame pushed Tech's lead to 4-1.

Harding quickly got one run back, as Kinnear belted a leadoff homer in the top of the seventh, but an RBI double by Kris Ayers in the bottom of the seventh put the Wonder Boys' lead at 5-2, and Armstrong would hold the Bisons at bay down the stretch to seal the win.

Ayers smashed three doubles in the win, while O'Neil had a 2-for-4 effort.

In the nightcap, once again Harding got on the board first, using a sacrifice fly in the first inning to jump ahead 1-0. Keenan Jumper's sacrifice fly in the second inning knotted the game, and Ayers' solo homer to lead off the fourth unknotted it.

Jumper stretched the Tech lead to 4-1 later in the inning with a two-run single.

After setting the side down in order in the fifth, Johnson gave way to the bullpen. Randy Vallejo quickly retired the first two hitters of the inning before Harding took advantage of an error to score an unearned run and pull to within 4-2. However, the Bisons would get no closer as Ryan Vruggink pitched a scoreless seventh to lock down the save.

The Wonder Boys close the regular season on Sunday, facing Harding in a 1 p.m. game at Tech Field.
