RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas Tech softball team was clicking on all cylinders Saturday afternoon, with a pitching staff that didn't allow a run over 12 innings and an offense that churned out 23 hits, finishing off a four-game Great American Conference sweep of Ouachita Baptist with victories of 7-0 and 8-0 at Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.
Shanna Davidson was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day, while
Chelsea Reeves was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBIs for the Golden Suns (32-12, 19-9 GAC), which saw seven different batters collect multiple hits.
Morgan Vaughan kept her solid run against the Tigers (10-28, 6-21 GAC) going with six shutout innings, and
Victoria Huie added five more scoreless innings in the run-rule-shortened second game.
Vaughan ran her scoreless streak to 8 1/3 innings against the Tigers, adding six innings in Saturday's first game to 2 1/3 of perfect work Friday evening. Saturday, the freshman allowed just four hits and walked none while striking out three to help make quick work of the visitors in the day's opener. After 1-2-3 innings in the first and second, Vaughan got a double play after allowing her first hit of the day in the third to help get to 11 outs in the first 11 batters. She would give up a hit in in the fourth and fifth, but quickly got out of those jams. The first two batters of the top of the sixth reached thanks to a hit and an error and were bunted into scoring position, but Vaughan calmly picked up two straight groundballs to end the threat.
While Vaughan was busy shutting down the Tigers from the circle, the Suns offense was clicking. After Vaughan set down the first six batters she faced in order,
Kambri Hill started the bottom of the second off by beating out an infield single, followed by
Ashley Savage's 10th home run of the season, a shot onto the berm in left field that made the score 2-0. After two quick outs, the next five Tech batters reached base, as Davidson,
Whitney Robinson and
Alex Edinger each recorded singles to load the bases. On the first pitch against an OBU reliever,
Janie Knowles smacked a single back up the middle to score a pair and drive the lead to four runs.
The Golden Suns would have opportunities to put more runs on the board, getting at least one runner on in every innings, but wouldn't push any runs across until another big push in the bottom of the sixth.
Jalissa Gum started by reaching on a fielding error, and with two outs, Savage singled up the middle to keep the frame going long enough for Reeves to get a shot, and the senior took advantage, blasting a home run to left-center to reach the final seven-run winning margin.
Knowles pounded out three hits in the opener, adding two RBIs, while Savage and Davidson each added a pair of base knocks.
The Tech scoring was a little more balanced in the finale, as
Whitney Robinson got the Suns on the board in the first after singling to start the inning, moving up on an Edinger sacrifice bunt and scoring on Gum's single to center. A one-out Reeves walk in the second was followed by back-to-back doubles from
Miranda Dupree and Davidson to increase the lead to 3-0. The Suns were set down in order in the third — the only time in 11 chances Saturday that happened — but responded with four straight hits with one out in the fourth. Reeves and Dupree singled, followed by Davidson's second straight double, which plated a run, and Robinson's second hit, which increased the score to 5-0.
Huie, who surrendered just four hits and a lone walk, picked up her second victory of the weekend after closing out Friday's doubleheader with a win. She allowed multiple baserunners just once and didn't allow a single runner past second base as she held the Tigers scoreless for the 14th straight inning in the series.
With a solid lead in hand, the Suns offense didn't stop in the fifth, with Gum tripling down the right field line to open the frame, Vaughan drawing a pinch hit walk and Saving picking up an infield single to drive home Gum. Already up 6-0, Reeves knocked a ball to deep right center, finishing off a triple that chased home two more runs and ended the game.
The Golden Suns are back in action Tuesday, traveling to Tahlequah, Oklahoma for a doubleheader against Central Region foe Northeastern State.
