TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —
Kambri Hill and
Jalissa Gum both hit home runs, powering the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns softball team (33-12) to a 7-5 win over Northeastern Oklahoma (17-26) on Tuesday.
Hill's solo blast in the second inning put the Golden Suns on the board, but the RiverHawks responded quickly, using a sacrifice fly to put up a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1.
The two teams traded scoreless frames until the fifth inning, when RBI singles by
Whitney Robinson and
Alex Edinger put Tech ahead 3-1, and a three-run homer by Gum stretched the Tech lead to 6-1.
Edinger added an RBI single in the sixth to give the Golden Suns a 7-1 lead, but the RiverHawks would not go quietly.
A two-run homer by Ryan Martin cut the Tech lead to 7-3, and Megan Ewton's RBI single later in the sixth pulled NSU to within 7-4.
Clark gave way to
Morgan Vaughan after six innings of work, and the RiverHawks continued their offensive pressure, taking advantage of a Golden Suns error to load the bases with two out. An RBI single by Bailey Applegate pulled NSU to within 7-5, but Vaughan was able to shut the door and pick up her third save of the year after allowing just one unearned run.
Sydnee Clark recorded six innings allowing four runs off of five hits and striking out four, improving to 10-3 on the season.
The scheduled second game of the doubleheader never got started, as inclement weather moved in and forced the cancellation of the nightcap.
"We had a really good effort by our team in wet conditions," said the Golden Suns head coach
Kristina McSweeney. "We had a couple miscues but we were able to bounce back. Offensively Jalissa [Gum] came up with a big hit as we put up eleven hits, and that's what we are going to need to go on against Henderson."
The Golden Suns return to action this Friday and Saturday, traveling to Arkadelphia, Arkansas for a four-game set with first-place Henderson State. Friday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader is slated for noon.
