SHAWNEE, Okla. —
Caleb McKinnon was 3-for-5 with four RBIs,
Collin O'Neil drove in three runs, and three other Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys baseball players drove in a pair of runs apiece as the Wonder Boys (19-14) sent the No. 8-ranked team in the NAIA, Oklahoma Baptist (30-4) to its fourth consecutive loss, winning a 15-14 decision on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bison got on the board in the second inning, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before the Wonder Boys were able to get on the board in the third, scoring a single run on a fielding error. In the fourth, back-to-back two-run doubles by McKinnon and O'Neil gave Tech a 5-4 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as OBU came back in the bottom of the fourth, using a wild pitch and error to score a pair of runs to reclaim the lead, and add another run on an RBI single by Shakeel Newton to push ahead 7-5.
Tech cut into the lead in the top of the fifth, using an RBI single by
Cole Fergus to pull to within 7-6, before OBU added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Garrett Gallacher.
Trailing 9-6, the Wonder Boys erupted in the sixth. An RBI single by McKinnon pulled Tech to within 9-7, and a two-run single by
Mark Vaughn knotted the contest. Tech reclaimed the lead on a two-run double by
Kris Ayers, and a two-run homer by
Patrick Castleberry gave Arkansas Tech a 13-9 advantage.
OBU pulled to within 13-10 on an RBI grounder in the bottom of the sixth, and narrowed the gap further to 13-11 in the seventh, but an RBI double by McKinnon and an RBI single by O'Neil gave Tech a 15-11 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
The Bison were not prepared to go quietly, however, scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame and putting the potential tying and winning runs on base with one out. However,
Ryan Vruggink was able to close the door, getting the final two outs of the contest to secure the victory.
Geoffrey Birkemeier took the win for the Wonder Boys, tossing 2.1 innings in relief and scattering six hits, and allowing two runs, both earned.
The Wonder Boys return to action this Friday and Saturday, hosting Southern Arkansas in a three-game set at Tech Field. Friday's first pitch is set for 7 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
