DURANT, Okla. –
Alexa Wimberly went 4-for-6 with two home runs, while
Whitney Robinson went 5-for-7 with one home run, and
Shanna Davidson went 3-6 with three home runs on Sunday as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (10-4, 4-2 GAC) split the series with Southeastern Oklahoma State (10-9, 6-2 GAC) winning the opening game 14-3 before falling 5-4 in the finale.
After the second game suspension on Saturday, due to darkness, the Savage Storm pulled out the win scoring seven runs in the bottom of the eighth off of three hits to win game two 17-13.
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Golden Suns got off to a slow start while the Savage Storm chalked up two runs in the bottom of the first. After keeping Southeastern off the board in the second inning, the Golden Suns scored two runs off of back-to-back home runs from seniors Robinson and Davidson, tying the game 2-2.
The Savage Storm responded scoring one run in the bottom of the third, but Tech rallied back in the top of the fourth.
Chelsea Reeves started the inning off with a single to left center followed by an
Ashley Savage homer to center field, to make the score 4-3. Davidson was hit by a pitch, followed by a
Miranda Dupree single through the left side and a Robinson walk to load the bases as Wimberly came up big, smashing a grand slam to center field making the score 8-3.
The Golden Suns kept the Savage Storm quiet through the fifth as freshman
Morgan Vaughan held Southeastern to just one hit in the inning.
Davidson led the sixth inning off with her second home run. Robinson singled to left field followed by another Wimberly home run, to make the score 11-3. The rally continued as Sam Herweck came in off the bench and singled to left center while
Ashley Anderson singled to left field.
Kambri Hill came in with a double to left field advancing Anderson to third and scoring Herweck, making the score 12-3.
Janie Knowles came in as a pinch hitter to complete the inning and hit a double scoring both Hill and Anderson, to make the score 14-3.
Sophomore
Sydnee Clark claimed win for Arkansas Tech after entering in relief for
Jalissa Gum. Clark threw three solid innings and held the Savage Storm to just three hits and one run. Vaughan finished the game off pitching the final two innings, keeping Southeastern off the board and allowing just two hits. The offense once again came in clutch with 15 hits and six home runs, as they plated 14 runs with 12 of those runs coming in the final three innings.
"This was a huge win to get after losing game two," said the Golden Suns head coach
Kristina McSweeney, "We kept our heads up and had kids hit in clutch situations to get the win in game three."
In the nightcap, Southeastern chalked up one in the bottom of the second, but Arkansas Tech responded scoring one run off of a Hill home run, tying the game 1-1. After senior
Victoria Huie kept the Savage Storm off of the board in the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Suns scored three runs in the top of the fifth. Davidson smashed a home run to put the Golden Suns up 2-1. Robinson singled and was scored by a Wimberly double to left field, followed by a home run by
Alicia Lowrey to make the score 4-1.
Southeastern responded scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 4-4 and plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh defeating the Golden Suns 5-4.
Huie went the distance pitching all seven innings, giving up only five total hits and five runs.
Arkansas Tech returns to action this Tuesday and Wednesday, traveling to Pittsburg, Kansas to play a double header against Pittsburg State on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m. and then to Joplin, Missouri to play a double header against Missouri Southern on Wednesday starting at 4 p.m.
