Box Score 2 PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (11-5) hit a total of five home runs as a team scoring a total of 14 runs against Pittsburg State University (8-4) as the two teams split a doubleheader on Tuesday, with the Golden Suns opening the day with a 11-3 win and the Gorillas taking a 11-3 win in the nightcap.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Golden Suns got off to a slow start while the Gorillas chalked up three runs in the first two innings, but the Golden Suns did not shut down.
In the top of the third,
Courtney Colunga's RBI infield single put the Golden Suns on the board. Tech knotted the game in the third inning, using an error and an RBI single by
Ashley Savage to even the game at 3-3.
Colunga's solo blast to open the fifth inning kicked off a six-run frame, as Savage belted a three-run homer and
Shanna Davidson added a two-run blast to give the Golden Suns a 9-3 lead.
Senior
Victoria Huie kept Pittsburg State off the board in the bottom of the fifth, as the Golden Suns struck again with a two-run single by
Alex Edinger in the sixth, making the score 11-3.
Huie improved to 5-1 on the season after scattering five hits over four innings, allowing three runs.
In the nightcap, Colunga hit a two-run blast, her second home run of the day in the top of the first to give the Golden Suns an early 2-0 lead. Pitt State narrowed it to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning with a solo blast.
Both teams traded scoreless frames over the next three innings, but after a two-out walk to
Kambri Hill,
Chelsea Reeves' RBI double gave Arkansas Tech a 3-1 advantage.
The Gorillas exploded offensively in the sixth, plating ten runs to invoke the eight-run rule and seal the doubleheader split.
The Golden Suns will travel to Joplin, Missouri tomorrow to play a double header against Missouri Southern, starting at 2 p.m.
