RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Freshman
Alex Edinger and sophomore
Jalissa Gum both went 3-for-5 and combined for total of four of the Golden Suns nine runs in the second game as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (16-6, 7-3 GAC) swept the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders (14-9, 6-5 GAC), winning the day's opener 4-3 before taking a 9-7 win in the nightcap.
After Southern Arkansas plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead in the opener, Tech got to work on offense, scoring all four of its runs over the next two innings.
Whitney Robinson's RBI double plated
Jalissa Gum in the top of the fifth, and brought Tech to within 2-1.
Tech tied the game in the sixth as
Kambri Hill scored on an error, and
Samantha Herweck's RBI double pushed Arkansas Tech ahead by a 4-2 margin.
Starter
Victoria Huie tossed the first five innings, working around seven hits to allow just a pair of earned runs and striking out two batters.
Kelsie Barker replaced her to start the sixth, and after allowing a leadoff home run to get the Muleriders within one, a single to the next batter and a walk, she picked up three straight groundouts to keep SAU at bay. After two runners reached in the bottom of the seventh, she induced an infield fly to get the second out and struck out the final batter of the game to pick up her second save of the season.
Edinger gave the Suns an early lead in the nightcap, reaching on a fielder's choice in the top of the first and coming around to score on Hill's double to left center for a quick 1-0 advantage. It was Edinger again in the third, getting a two-out single and scoring to make it 2-0 on a Colunga double. The offense once again got going with two outs in the top of the fourth. After SAU tied it up with a two-spot in the third, Gum doubled, Herweck got her second hit of the day pinch-hitting to drive her in, and Davidson doubled to push Herweck across and boost the lead back to two runs.
That lead was pushed to 5-2 in the fifth, as Edinger and Colunga slapped back-to-back singles to start, and Gum later singled to drive in Colunga with two outs. The Lady Muleriders would go on to plate three in the bottom half of the frame to draw even once again, but the Suns answered the call. Davidson, Robinson and Edinger all singled to start the inning and load the bases, and with two outs,
Alexa Wimberly lifted a ball to right field that the SAU fielder couldn't handle, allowing a pair of runs to score. A two-run home run tied it up again for the Lady Muleriders in the bottom of the seventh to send it into extras.
With two outs in the top of the eighth and the score 7-7, Hill reached first on an error by the first baseman, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Savage singled off of a throwing error by the shortstop, advancing to second and scoring Hill to put the Suns up 8-7. Senior
Chelsea Reeves came up big with a single up the middle scoring Savage to put the Golden Suns up 9-7.
Freshman
Morgan Vaughan claimed the win in game two as she threw seven of the eight innings, only allowing nine hits, striking out two and allowing seven runs. Barker came in relief in the eighth facing four hitters allowing only one hit.
The Golden Suns and Lady Muleriders will be back in action at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon to wrap up their four-game series with a second doubleheader at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.
