WONDER BOYS TAME HILLCATS

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — From the start, the Arkansas Tech baseball team looked ready to grab a decisive victory in a nonconference game Tuesday afternoon against Rogers State at Tech Field, and they did just that, using a pair of grand slams and a combined seven-hit shutout from the pitching staff to earn a 13-0 victory.

The Wonder Boys (14-10), who have now won 10 of their past 11 games, smacked 12 hits on the day, with nine different batters collecting a single base knock and Patrick Castleberry leading the way with a 3-for-4 day, scoring two runs and knocking in seven RBIs. Rogers State (8-12) only managed to get one runner to third base over the nine innings, as Tech pitchers struck out seven batters, allowed only two walks and were the beneficiaries of three double plays.

Tech got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first, as Caleb McKinnon reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, Kris Ayers was hit by a pitch and Castleberry drew a four-pitch walk. Bryan Heward made the damage count, blasting the second pitch he saw just inside the foul pole in left for a one-out grand slam. Tech pushed across another run in the second, as Cole Fergus led off with a four-pitch walk and John Lassiter followed with a double to the wall in right to put two men in scoring position. McKinnon then lifted a fly ball to center, deep enough to plate Fergus for the 5-0 lead.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Tech offense got going again, as Marcus Wilson smacked a single through the left side of the infield, Ayers singled to right to move Wilson up to third, and Castleberry lifted one over the infield to plate the game's sixth run. The hosts extended their lead even more in the seventh, as the bases were loaded with one out after Lassiter was hit by a pitch, McKinnon singled past a diving third baseman and Ayers was hit by a pitch. Castleberry followed by blasting the first pitch he saw over the fence in left for the grand slam — his ninth home run of the year.

Keenan Jumper got things started once again with two outs, drawing a walk before Collin O'Neil singled to move him to third and a Fergus base knock drove him home to push the lead to 11-0. The Wonder Boys got two more in the eighth, with Mark Vaughn and Rafiel Johnson both cracking singles before Castleberry line a shot just inside the bag at third for a two-run double to get to the final margin.

While the Tech offense was scoring runs in droves, its pitching staff was continuing its recent solid run, holding the Rogers State bats at bay. Starter Josh Ryan tossed four scoreless innings to begin the game, allowing just four hits, striking out two and walking none and not allowing a Hillcat runner to advance past second base. Aaron Johnson followed, throwing three frames bookended by 1-2-3 innings and striking out three batters. Nate Rutherford pitched a perfect eighth inning, and Zach Skelton did the same after a leadoff walk in the ninth, inducing a double play to end it.

The Wonder Boys return to action this weekend, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma in a three-game Great American Conference series beginning with a 7 p.m. single game Friday.
