TIMELY HITS LIFT SUNS TO SWEEP OF LIONS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JOPLIN, Mo. – Ashley Savage provided all the offense that the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns softball team would need in the day's opener, while driving in another run in the nightcap as the No. 23 Arkansas Tech Golden Suns softball team (13-5) swept a doubleheader from Missouri Southern (1-10) on Wednesday, winning 2-1 and 3-2.

Savage opened scoring in the second inning with a solo homer, but MSSU's Abi Corbett drove in the tying run with an infield single in the bottom of the fifth inning. The tie was short-lived, however, as Savage used a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth to push the Golden Suns' lead to 2-1.

Meanwhile, Kelsie Barker was up to the task in the circle, going the distance and allowing only one run on six hits, fanning five to pick up her first win of the season.
Alex Edinger had three hits, while Courtney Colunga, Chelsea Reeves, and Savage all added a pair.

The nightcap saw another pitcher's duel, as Miranda Dupree's leadoff homer in the top of the third provided the Golden Suns all the offense they would see until later innings.
Meanwhile, Morgan Vaughan was stellar through four shutout innings, allowing just two hits. Barker came into the game in relief and picked up the save after allowing two runs on four hits in three innings of work.

Those runs would come later, however, as Arkansas Tech padded its lead in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Kambri Hill and an RBI single by Savage.

With the Golden Suns leading 3-0, MSSU used three consecutive singles to get on the board, and cut their deficit to 3-2 on an RBI grounder. However, Vaughan pitched out of the jam to hold the lead, and set the Lions down in order in the seventh to seal the win.

Arkansas Tech returns to action this weekend, hosting Arkansas-Monticello in a four-game series this Saturday and Sunday at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.
Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 2 p.m. start while Sunday's doubleheader starts at noon.
