WEATHERFORD, Okla. —
Fatima Adams hit the game-winning basket with 1.4 seconds remaining in overtime to cap a 24-point, 16-rebound effort as the No. 25 Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (16-3, 11-2 Great American Conference) spoiled the upset-minded Southwestern Oklahoma Lady Bulldogs (7-11, 4-8 GAC) with a 64-62 victory on Thursday at the Pioneer Cellular Events Center.
Arkansas Tech controlled the pace in the early going, opening up as much as a seven-point (20-13) lead with eight minutes to play in the half. Southwestern Oklahoma used a 17-2 run to close the half, capped by a Jennifer Williams 3-pointer with four seconds to play in the half to give the Lady Bulldogs an eight-point (30-22) halftime advantage.
The Lady Bulldogs twice pushed their lead into double digits in the opening minutes of the second half, leading by 37-27 with 18:20 to play, but the Golden Suns chipped away at the SWOSU lead and tied the game with 12:08 to play in the second half on a layup by Adams.
With the game tied at 47-47 with 8:46 to play, the Golden Suns went on a 9-2 run to claim a seven-point (56-49) lead with 3:12 to play, and tying their largest lead of the contest.
The Lady Bulldogs, however, would answer the bell, and close the second half on a 7-0 run to knot the game at 56-56 and send the game to overtime.
The Golden Suns pulled ahead by as many as three points in the overtime period, using a jumper by
Danielle Frachiseur with two minutes to play to take a 61-58 lead.
However, SWOSU narrowed the gap to two and then took advantage of a second-chance bucket by Jessica Penner with 28 seconds to play in the overtime to knot the game at 62-62.
The Golden Suns held the final possession, and after Adams missed a shot with eight seconds on the clock, she made the most of her second-chance opportunity, sealing the win with her final shot.
Adams' point and rebound total led both teams. Frachiseur turned in a 13-point, three-board performance while
Anissa Pounds added ten points.
Jacinda Myers-Sanders reached double figures in rebounds, grabbing 11 boards.
Arkansas Tech returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 12, hosting Northwestern Oklahoma at Tucker Coliseum. A 5:30 p.m. contest is scheduled.
