DURANT, Okla. – A 21-point, eight-rebound performance by
Fatima Adams, coupled with a 19-point effort by
Anissa Pounds and a 11-point effort by
Katrina Hayden were not enough to overcome five Southeastern Oklahoma players reaching double figures as the Savage Storm (18-8, 11-7 Great American Conference) rolled to an 80-68 win over the No. 20 Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (19-5, 4-4 GAC) on Saturday.
Tech controlled the opening minutes of the game, taking an early 10-5 lead at the 14:43 mark after a Hayden layup. However, the Savage Storm rallied over the next three minutes, knotting the game at 12-12 after a Cheree Kiser 3-pointer with 12:10 to play.
The Golden Suns would pull ahead again at the 6:55 mark as
Jacinda Myers-Sanders hit a layup to give the Golden Suns a 22-21 lead, but the Savage Storm quickly reclaimed the lead.
The two teams traded leads down the stretch, but a 3-pointer by Sa'liesha Hunter with 39 seconds to play until half put the Savage Storm ahead, and they would not trail again. Southeastern went into the break with a two-point (35-33) lead.
Tech tied the contest in the opening seconds of the second half, but the Savage Storm pushed ahead, opening up a seven-point (44-37) lead three minutes into the half, eventually stretching their advantage into the double digits and holding the Golden Suns at arm's length the remainder of the way.
Arkansas Tech held a 43-36 advantage on the rebounding glass, but the Savage Storm connected on 13 3-pointers to provide more than enough fuel for the Storm offense.
The Golden Suns will play their final home contest of the 2014-15 season on Thursday, Feb. 26, hosting Harding at Tucker Coliseum. A 5:30 p.m. tip is scheduled. Live video, statistics, and audio are available at www.arkansastechsports.com.
