ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - A rocky start doomed the Arkansas Tech baseball team in its Great American Conference opener against Ouachita Baptist Friday afternoon, as the Tigers struck for nine runs in the first two innings to jump out on their way to a 10-0 victory over the Wonder Boys at Rab Rodgers Field in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
The Wonder Boys (4-5, 0-1 GAC) could only muster three hits, as
Caleb McKinnon,
Bryan Heward and
Cole Fergus each reached on singles, but it wasn't enough to keep the Tigers (4-4, 1-0 GAC) from snapping Tech's 17-game regular season conference winning streak.
After two stellar starts,
Cody Jones took the brunt of Ouachita's offensive outburst, allowing nine runs — eight earned — on nine hits with one walk and a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.
Geofferey Birkemeier came in for the final 4 1/3, giving up five hits and two walks, but allowing only one run.
McKinnon's base knock extended his hitting streak to five games in the early going of the 2015 season, while it was Heward's fourth game in a row with a hit. Fergus reached base a second time with a hit by pitch, while
Kris Ayers drew a pair of walks.
The Wonder Boys and Tigers conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday, with live statistics for the twinbill available at
