GOLDEN SUNS HOLD OFF TOUGH COTTON BLOSSOMS SQUAD

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. Fatima Adams turned in a 16-point effort, Caroline Eubanks added 13 points, Danielle Frachiseur scored 12 and Katrina Hayden added 11 as the No. 17 Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (10-1, 5-0 Great American Conference) captured a 70-61 win over the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (5-6, 3-3 GAC) on Saturday at Tucker Coliseum.

The Golden Suns ran out to a 7-2 lead four minutes into the contest, but UAM came back quickly and knotted the game at 9-9 at the 13:45 mark. The Golden Suns and Cotton Blossoms would have four ties and eleven lead changes over the course of the first 20 minutes, with Tech pulling ahead by as many as the aforementioned five points and UAM later claiming a four-point (26-22) lead with 5:18 to play in the half.

With 51 seconds to play in the half, the Cotton Blossoms used a pair of free throws by Jordan Goforth to first tie the contest and then take a one-point (33-32) lead that they would carry into halftime.

The second half opened much as the first half closed, with the two teams trading leads over the opening two minutes. However, Tori Nichols' layup at the 18:32 mark gave the Cotton Blossoms a lead that would survive through four ties to the 11:44 mark, when Eubanks' layup put the Golden Suns ahead once again.

A 3-pointer by UAM's Nikki Mullen gave the Blossoms a 46-45 lead with 10:49 to play, but just 15 seconds later Mary Crow hit a layup that put the Golden Suns ahead, and after a pair of ties, the last coming with 7:59 to play (51-51), Frachiseur hit a layup at the 7:45 mark to put Tech ahead for good.

The game's final nine-point margin was Arkansas Tech's largest lead of the game.

The game saw, in total, 10 ties and 16 lead changes as the Golden Suns outshot UAM 50 to 44 percent. The Golden Suns held a 36-22 advantage on the rebounding glass, while holding a 11-2 advantage in second-chance points and a 6-2 edge in fast-break points.

Arkansas Tech returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 8, traveling to Alva, Okla. to face Northwestern Oklahoma. Tip-off from Percefull Fieldhouse is set for 5:30 p.m., with the game scheduled for broadcast on 100.9-FM (KWKK) in Russellville.
