Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

GOLDEN SUNS RIDE OUT STORM

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — The No. 9/15 Arkansas Tech women's basketball team pushed four players into double figures, closing the game by making 12 of its final 13 shots from the field over the final 10:05 to turn back Southeastern Oklahoma 86-75 Thursday evening in Great American Conference action at Tucker Coliseum.

Fatima Adams poured in a game-high 22 points for the Golden Suns (13-1, 8-0 GAC), adding eight rebounds. Anissa Pounds went 5-of-8 from beyond the arc to finish with 21 points and grabbed a game-high nine boards. Katrina Hayden chipped in with 15 points, with Jacinda Myers-Sanders putting up 12 to go along with eight rebounds.

"It was a terrific win," Arkansas Tech coach Dave Wilbers said. "I'm very happy with the victory. I thought the last six minutes we played outstanding. We got quality shots and just executed our offense really, really well. And defended real well. They're a good team with a lot of scorers, a lot of 3-point shooters. They're real hard to defend because they have five guards out on the floor. But I thought we did a real good job of keeping them in front of us, and for the most part, playing without fouling."

The contest got off to a slow start, with the teams combining for four missed field goals and three turnovers before the Savage Storm (12-4, 5-3 GAC) took a 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws by Emily Williams at the 18:13 mark. Caroline Eubanks countered with the first basket of the game 18 seconds later, as the two sides battled back and forth throughout much of the first half, trading the lead five times over the next seven minutes.

An Adams layup with 9:51 left in the opening half made it 14-13 Golden Suns, a lead they wouldn't give up again. Hayden followed with a pair of freebies and a conventional three-point play to help stretch the lead to 10 by the 6:30 mark, and her 3-pointer with 39 seconds left on the clock stretched the lead to 14, the widest margin of the first half before Southeastern closed it to 35-25 at the break.

Tech opened the lead back up quickly in the second half, going up 50-33 on one of Pounds' four 3-balls in the half to cap a 15-8 run out of the locker room. The Golden Suns were up 11 when their hot streak started over the final 10 minutes, and needed every one of those big shots to hold off the Storm, who made 9-of-17 3-pointers and 17-of-19 free throws in the second half.

The Suns went ahead 72-52 on another Pounds triple with 7:10 left and turned that to a 22-point advantage on a layup by Pounds a minute later. Southeastern would claw all the way back to down just nine with 21 seconds to go, but a lay-in from Fabiana Monte stretched the lead back to double digits and ended any chance of a miracle comeback.

"They're outstanding from the free throw line," Wilbers said of the Savage Storm. "They weren't even hitting rim. I'm real proud of our team. It felt like they gave great effort and great energy. It felt like both teams were tired during the game, because it was a high-intensity game, and that's what these GAC games are like.

Tech shot an even 32-of-64 from the field for the game and 8-of 16 from deep. The Golden Suns won the battle on the glass 42-27 and outscored the Storm in the paint 42-10.

Tech returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday, hosting GAC foe East Central back at Tucker Coliseum.
