GOLDEN SUNS VOLLEYBALL OPENS HOME SLATE TUESDAY

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - After posting a 2-2 record in the season-opening Midwestern State Hampton Inn-vitational, the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns will return to Tucker Coliseum on Tuesday to open the home and Great American Conference portions of their schedule against the Lady Reddies of Henderson State. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start.

The Golden Suns finished 9-5 in GAC play last season before an impressive sweep through the GAC tournament catapulted Arkansas Tech to a conference title. The Golden Suns have been one of the dominant programs in the three-year history of the Great American Conference, winning two of three conference titles and posting a combined 36-8 record in GAC matches. Meanwhile, Henderson State has struggled since the founding of the new league, posting a combined 2-42 record in GAC matches.

Arkansas Tech holds a 28-25 advantage in the all-time series against the Lady Reddies, but Tech has not lost a set to the Lady Reddies since the 2010 season and has not lost a match to Henderson State since November 1, 2007.

However, those records all go out the window as the two teams take to the court for the first conference matchup of the 2014 season. Henderson State comes in with an 0-4 record after falling to McMurry, Central Oklahoma, Fort Hays State, and Union at the HSU Classic on opening weekend, while the Golden Suns are an even 2-2 after wins against Molloy and Midwestern State bookending losses to No. 10 Washburn and Colorado State-Pueblo.

Offensively, Tech has been paced by Emily Todd, whose 3.70 kills per set lead the Golden Suns. Todd and Kaylee Konsella are the team leaders in kills, while Sierra Nighswonger and Alyssa Kool have spent time setting in the early portion of the season.

Freshman libero Madison Nagel has been quite impressive in the early going, averaging 5.87 digs per set and posting a 31-dig effort at Midwestern State.

Tuesday's matchup will be played on Student Welcome and I Bleed Green and Gold night at Tucker Coliseum, and will be the Golden Suns' last home match before Sept. 19, when Tech plays host to Lubbock Christian.
