GOLDEN SUNS SPLIT ON OPENING DAY OF SEASON

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA FALLS, Texas Emily Todd turned in a 23-kill day, picking up a 10-kill, 12-dig effort in the finale, while Madison Nagel had a 36-dig day as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns volleyball team (1-1) split on the opening day of the 2014 season, sweeping past Molloy College 3-0 in the season opener and falling 3-0 to No. 10 Washburn in the day's finale.

In the opener, Tech raced to a 25-14 win in the opening set, before winning 25-17 and 25-19 in the second and third sets to clinch the sweep.

Todd led all players with 13 kills in the opener, hitting .346 for the match and adding one service ace. Kaci Jackson and Nagel had ten digs, while Sierra Nighswonger dished out 22 assists. Alyssa Kool turned in an 11-assist effort in the opener as well.

Todd's offensive numbers led a balanced Golden Suns effort that saw Kaylee Konsella get nine kills with a .533 hitting percentage, and Katie Huff post six kills with a .500 hitting percentage to go along with her three blocks (two solo, one assisted).

Tech held a .274 to -.011 hitting advantage for the match, while the Golden Suns turned five service aces in, led by Nagel's three. Tech hit a match-high .296 in the second set.
In the finale, Todd's 10 kills paced the Golden Suns, but Washburn swept to the win behind set wins of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-16.

Nighswonger again led the way with 26 assists, while Nagel turned in an impressive 26 digs. Huff again had three blocks (one solo, two assisted), while Rachel Hampton assisted on a pair of blocks.

Washburn outhit the Golden Suns .183 to .053, however, the Golden Suns kept their hitting percentage out of the negative for the entire match, hitting a match-best .095 in the second set.

Tech returns to action on Saturday, closing out the Midwestern State-Hampton Inn-vitational with a pair of matches, opening at 11:30 a.m. against Colorado State-Pueblo and finishing with a 4:30 p.m. matchup against host Midwestern State.
