FRIEDEL’S LAST-SECOND SHOT LIFTS WONDER BOYS OVER CAMERON

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.— Tyler Friedel hit the game-winning basket with 1.6 seconds remaining on the clock to lift the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys basketball team (2-3) to a 66-64 come-from-behind win over Cameron (3-1) on Tuesday at Tucker Coliseum.

The Wonder Boys started the game red-hot, opening the contest on an 8-0 run over the first four minutes of the game. Tech led by as many as ten points (12-2) five minutes into the game, but Cameron fought back, using a 10-2 run to pull to within two (14-12) at the 12:26 mark of the first half.

Tech pushed its lead out yet again, and took an eight-point (36-28) lead into the half.

The Aggies seized control in the first minutes of the second half, opening with an 11-3 run to tie the game at 39-39 with 15:54 to play. This time, the Aggies would use red-hot shooting to create separation to push ahead, leading by as many as six points (50-44) with 11:37 to play.

The Wonder Boys responded with a run of their own, using a 13-3 run to reclaim a 57-53 lead with 4:57 to play.

The Aggies scored the next eight points to pull ahead by four points (61-57) with 1:48 to play, and setting the stage for the dramatic comeback.

On the ensuing possession, Clarence Willard drove into the paint and hit a layup, drawing a foul along the way. The senior converted the free throw to pull the Wonder Boys to within one point.

The Aggies missed a 3-pointer on the following possession, and the Wonder Boys collected the rebound. With an opportunity to claim the lead, Tech was whistled for an illegal screen, sending Cameron's Desmond Henry back to the line with 57 seconds to play, shooting the one-and-one.

Henry missed the first shot, and the Wonder Boys had the chance to pull ahead with under a minute to play. Nick Wayman drove for a layup, drawing a whistle. The basket was good, but Wayman was called for his fifth foul on the continuation.

The Wonder Boys had claimed a 62-61 lead, but once again, Cameron was sent to the free-throw line with the opportunity to pull ahead with 38 seconds remaining.

Again, the Aggies missed on the first half of the one-and-one, and Willard grabbed the rebound. With just over 30 seconds remaining, Cameron was forced to foul, and Clarence Willard was sent to the line to shoot a pair of free throws. The senior made both shots, pushing Tech's lead to 64-61.

Cameron quickly pushed the ball downcourt, and Cameron Lee buried a game-tying 3-pointer with 24 seconds to play, knotting the game at 64-64.

The Wonder Boys would set up for one final shot, and with 1.6 seconds remaining, Friedel put the Wonder Boys ahead for good.

Mike Balogun led all scorers with 17 points, while Wayman turned in a 16-point, six-rebound effort. Friedel scored 10 points in the winning effort. The Aggies held a 50.0 to 46.0 percent advantage in shooting, while
outrebounding the Wonder Boys 32-24. However, Tech forced 18 turnovers by Cameron and made the most of their trips to the charity stripe, connecting on 14 of 17 shots.

The Wonder Boys return to action on Friday, Nov. 28, opening play at the Arkansas Tech University Thanksgiving Classic against Northeastern State. Tech will tip off at 6 p.m., while Ouachita Baptist will face Southwest Baptist in the day's opener at 4 p.m.
