RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns volleyball team (12-5, 4-1 Great American Conference) returns to action this weekend, traveling to Southeastern Oklahoma on Friday and East Central on Saturday.
The Golden Suns enter the weekend's matchups on a four-match winning streak, and having won six of seven. Tech has played just one non-conference matchup on the road this season, a 3-0 sweep of Ouachita Baptist on Sept. 16.
Friday's 7 p.m. matchup with Southeastern Oklahoma (8-7, 2-1 GAC) features the Golden Suns playing a road contest against a team that has not enjoyed much of a home-court advantage thus far this season. The Savage Storm is just 2-4 on their home court, yet two of those losses came at the hands of No. 17 Central Missouri as well as a Central Oklahoma team that has received votes in the most recent AVCA top-25 poll. SE enters Friday's match on a three-match winning streak.
East Central (3-13, 0-5 GAC), meanwhile, has had its share of difficulties in the early going of the season. The Tigers have dropped their most recent pair of GAC matches, falling 3-0 to Arkansas-Monticello and 3-1 to Southern Arkansas. The Tigers have 3-2 near-misses in league play to Southwestern Oklahoma and East Central, with both matches coming in heartbreaking fashion. The Tigers won the first two sets against SNU 25-22 and 25-23 before the Crimson Storm rallied to win the final three sets 25-16, 25-21, and 15-10. Against SWOSU, the Bulldogs took 25-22 and 25-16 wins in the first two sets before the Tigers rallied to win the third and fourht sets 28-26 and 25-20. However, SWOSU closed out that match in the fifth set with a 15-13 win.
The Golden Suns face ECU at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
This weekend's matches start a three-match road swing for the Golden Suns that will conclude on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Arkansas-Monticello. The Golden Suns will play six of seven games on the road, however, as after returning to Tucker Coliseum on Oct. 9 against Southern Arkansas, Tech faces Henderson State (10/14), Mid-America Christian (10/16) and Southwestern Oklahoma (10/17) on the road.
