RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. —
Logan Genz racked up 18 tackles,
Wesley McKinney added 14 stops, as Arkansas Tech held Henderson State to its lowest offensive output of the 2014 season in a 24-3 loss to the Reddies on Saturday at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.
"I thought we did a pretty good job moving the ball in the first half," said head coach
Raymond Monica. "We just couldn't get the ball in the end zone."
It was the big play that was the undoing for the Wonder Boys, as the shortest Henderson State scoring play was a 40-yard field goal by Houston Ray in the fourth quarter.
However, Kevin Rodgers and Darius Davis established the long-distance connection early and often, as the two connected on a 56-yard strike early in the first quarter, a 68-yard strike later in the first, and a 58-yard strike in the opening moments of the second quarter.
The Wonder Boys' defense made some effective halftime adjustments, holding the Reddies to just 92 yards of offense in the second half.
"We held them to three points in the second half," said Monica. "We held them out of the end zone, didn't give up any touchdowns."
Indeed, a large part of the Reddies' offense came on the three big plays. HSU racked up 182 yards of offense on those three plays and 196 yards over the remainder of the game.
The Reddies' quick-strike capability pushed them ahead by two scores with eight minutes to go in the opening quarter, but the Wonder Boys pushed into HSU territory and got on the board as
Randy Velazquez booted a career-best 45-yard field goal to pull Tech to within 14-3 with 3:51 to go.
HSU dialed long distance on the opening play of the second quarter, but the defenses settled in for battle from that point forward, with neither team giving much space to the other.
Quincy Peyton picked up his second interception of the season as Rodgers attempted to hit Darius Davis on a crossing route, setting up a field goal attempt that missed wide left.
Arkansas Tech forced Henderson State to punt seven times during the contest, setting a new season high, as HSU had only been forced to punt four times in two separate games – against Southern Nazarene and Northwestern Oklahoma.
The Wonder Boys will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, traveling to Arkadelphia, Ark. for a matchup with Ouachita Baptist. A 1 p.m. kickoff is scheduled.
