REBECKA SURTEVALL SHOOTS 78 IN SECOND ROUND OF NCAA DIVISION II WOMEN'S GOLF SUPER REGION 4 TOURNAMENT, STANDS TIED FOR 29TH PLACE HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND
NCAA D-II Super Region 4 second round results
LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona – Arkansas Tech freshman Rebecka Surtevall fired a six-over par 78 in Monday's second round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Region 4 Tournament at the Wigwam Resort to fall into a tie for 29th place.
Surtevall, who is a native of Stockholm, Sweden, is one of four individuals from non-regional qualifying teams competing in this year's Super Region 4 Tournament.
The top three scoring teams and top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship on May 16-19 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Kent., as part of the NCAA D-II Spring Championships Festival. The Festival is hosted by Bellarmine University and the Louisville Sports Commission.
Surtevall, who is the first Golden Sun golfer to ever earn an NCAA Regional berth in school history, opened Monday's second round by carding a four-over par 40 on the front nine, but rebounded to shoot a two-over par 38 on the back nine at the par-72, 6,191 Heritage (Red) Course. After recording four bogeys and a double bogey in the first round, Surtevall recorded six bogeys in the second round and had no birdies. Surtevall had two birdies in Sunday's opening round.
For 36 holes, Surtevall has shot a 154 to put her tied for 29th place with Newman's Linzi Allan, who is also competing as an individual.
Central Oklahoma's Taylor Neidy, who shot a four-under par 68 in the second round, took over the lead among individuals as she has shot a four-under par 140 for 36 holes. CSU-Monterey Bay's Courtney Soekland fired a three-under par 69 in the second round to move into second place with a 143 for 36 holes. First round leader, Tarleton States' Jacqueline Lau shot a five-over par 77 to fall to sixth place. Lau has shot a 145 for 36 holes.
Among the nine teams competing, Tarleton State continued to hold onto its first round lead as the TexAnns carded a 299 in the second round after shooting a 291 in Sunday's opening round to push its total for 36 holes to 590. Tarleton holds a nine shot lead over second place CSU-Monterey Bay (598), who shot a 300 in the second round, while super region host Grand Canyon and Central Oklahoma are tied for third place after shooting 36 hole totals of 599. Grand Canyon shot a 303 in the second round, while UCO fired a 295 in Monday's round.
Surtevall will close out play in the Super Region 4 Tournament on Tuesday with a another 18 hole as she will tee from the No. 1 tee on the Heritage Course at 9:30 a.m. CST.
