REBECKA SURTEVALL SHOOTS FOUR-OVER 76 IN FIRST ROUND TO STAND TIED FOR 20TH AFTER FIRST ROUND OF NCAA D-II WOMEN'S GOLF SUPER REGION 4 TOURNAMENT

LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona – Arkansas Tech freshman Rebecka Surtevall opened up the first round of action here Sunday in the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Regional 4 at the Wigwam Resort by shooting a four-over par 76 to finish the first day in a five-way tie for 20th place.

surtevallSurtevall, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, is one of four individuals from non-regional qualifying teams to earn a berth a berth in this year's Super Region 4. Three of the four individuals shot first round 76's, while the fourth individual carded a 79.

The top three scoring teams and top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship on May 16-19 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Kent., as part of the NCAA D-II Spring Championships Festival. The Festival is hosted by Bellarmine University and the Louisville Sports Commission.

Surtevall, who is the first Golden Sun golfer to ever earn an NCAA Regional berth in school history, was named both the inaugural Great American Conference Player and Freshman of the Year and took home individual medalist honors at this year's GAC Women's Golf Championships. On the season, Surtevall recorded a single-season school record best scoring average of 77.8 in nine tournaments and 19 rounds of golf. She had six Top 5 finishes, including taking home individual medalist honors at three events, including becoming the first Tech women's golfer to win medalist honors at the conference tournament. At the GAC Tournament, Surtevall fired a school-record 54 hole score of 232, including firing a 75 in the tournament's final round.

In Sunday's first round on the par-72, 6,191 Heritage (Red) Course at the Wigwam Resort, Surtevall shot a four-over 40 on the front nine, before carding an even-par 36 on the back nine to finish with a 76. Surtevall recorded two birdies for the round as she shot a 2 on the par 3 No. 4 hole and finished the round by shooting a 4 on the par 5 No. 18 hole.

Tarleton State's Jacqueline Lau posted the lowest first round score she carded a four-under par 68 to hold a one shot advantage over Sonoma State's Spencer Haller, who shot a three-under par 69.

Among the nine teams competing, Tarleton State holds the first round lead as the TexAnns shot a three-over par 291. St. Edward's fired a 292 to stand in second place and Grand Canyon, who is the super region's host, shot a 296 to stand in third place.

Surtevall will return to the course on Monday as she will play another 18 holes and begin from the No. 1 tee. The three-day super regional tournament will conclude with another 18 holes on Tuesday.
