FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team went on the road on Friday and swept Arkansas-Fort Smith, 7-0, to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Golden Suns secured the first point of the match at No. 1 doubles as
Monica Balau and
Elis Gergel beat the UAFS pairing of Arianna De Bernardo and Rayssa Domingues, 7-5. That decision broke the 1-all tie in doubles as the Golden Suns won by default at No. 3 and lost, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles.
A second win by default opened singles action, putting the Golden Suns up 2-0 in the match.
Natalya Montoya then won her No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-2. The match was then clinched with Gergel's 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
Playing out the remainder of the match,
Rebecca Arnold won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2 followed by Balau's split set win at No. 1, 6-1, 2-6 (7).
Lucia Perez completed the sweep for the Golden Suns with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for a trio of neutral site matches next weekend. First among them is a Friday afternoon match against Angelo State. First-serve is set for 3 p.m. in Edmond.
