SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team opened the spring portion of their season on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 6-1 win on the road at Evangel University.
The Golden Suns would make it a clean sweep in doubles, winning all three flights. Flights two and three were first to finish as the No. 2 pairing of
Natalya Montoya and
Lucia Perez and the No. 3 pairing of
Nayara Alvarez and
Rebecca Arnold won their matches, 6-1. Tech's No. 1 pairing of
Monica Balau and
Elis Gergel also won their doubles match, 6-3.
In singles play, the Golden Suns won six of the seven, falling only in a 10-point tiebreaker at flight No. 1 singles.
Rebecca Arnold at No. 4 singles and
Nayara Alvarez at No. 6 singles swept their matches and did not drop a game.
Natalya Montoya and
Lucia Perez were nearly as unblemished as Montoya won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles while Perez won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.
Elis Gergel handled her No. 2 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-2.
Monica Balau at No. 1 singles bounced back from an opening set loss 3-6 and won her second set 6-3. She would fall in the tiebreaker, 10-4.
The Golden Suns will now prepare for their next match, February 20 date on the road at Arkansas-Fort Smith. That match is slated to start at 11 a.m.
