Golden Suns drop neutral site match to Angelo State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team played its second-straight neutral site match against a top team from the Lone Star Conference on Saturday afternoon as they took on Angelo State at the Ward Tennis Center in Arkadelphia.

Unfortunately, for the Golden Suns, the result on Saturday mirrored the previous day's as Tech lost to Angelo State, 5-2.

The Rambelles got the match scoring started by winning the closely-contest doubles point. After losing flight two doubles, 6-1, the Golden Suns' duo of Monica Balau and Melanie Griffiths leveled action in doubles with an impressive 6-4 win at the top-flight. The deciding match in doubles went to a tie break after the match was knotted at six-all. The tie-breaker went in favor of Angelo State to give them the 1-0 lead in the match.

In singles action, Angelo won the first two singles matches that finished to go up 3-0. The wins for Angelo came at flights four and one.

With four more singles matches left to decide the match, the Golden Suns were in position to win all four thanks to solid play.

Unfortunately, the team match was decided with the third singles match to finish as Angelo picked up a come-from-behind win at flight five. Not long after that, however, the Golden Suns secured their points in the match with wins at flights two and three.

Flight two saw Monica Balau win in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (1) while Elis Gergel overcame a set one defeat and won her flight three match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The final singles match on the court was also a closely-contested battle, but ultimately it was Angelo's Ivet Stancheva that won in the tie-breaking set.

The Golden Suns will now prepare for a road match at Hendrix on Monday, March 4. First-serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
